BITS Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology and Science) Admission 2026: Cutoff, Fees & Placements

Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani is an institution deemed to be a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, through a Government of India notification dated 18 June 1964. It is private: there is no government quota, no state counselling and no JoSAA seat here. Its three Indian STEM campuses — Pilani (Rajasthan), K K Birla Goa and Hyderabad — admit B.E. students through one common process; the Dubai campus and the newer Mumbai schools (BITSoM, BITSLAW, BITSDES) run separate admissions. The official site also displays Institution of Eminence recognition.

In the NIRF 2024 Engineering rankings, BITS Pilani stood at rank 20 with a score of 63.04. Its own NIRF India Rankings 2025 submission (institute ID IR-E-U-0391) reports a sanctioned four-year UG intake of 2,003 for 2023-24 — notably down from 2,961 the year before — and a total UG strength of 10,485 across programmes, still a large institution by any measure.

The Pilani campus is at Vidya Vihar, Pilani, Rajasthan 333031 — a small town, not a metro. That single fact shapes much of the decision: the brand and recruiter pool are national, the location is not. Every figure on this page comes from documents published on the official BITS and NIRF domains, with the year and source named inline.

The only mainstream route into B.E. at the Indian campuses is BITSAT, the institute's own computer-based test. JEE Main, MHT-CET and board-merit routes do not apply. For 2026, Session 1 ran 15–17 April 2026 (2026) and Session 2 ran 25–26 May 2026; applications opened 15 December 2025, the Session 1 deadline was 19 March 2026, and Session 2 registration ran 20 April–5 May 2026. You may appear in both sessions.

Eligibility, per the official criteria document published for BITSAT-2025: an aggregate of 75% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12, with at least 60% in each of the three individually, counting theory and practicals. Only your latest Class 12 performance is considered, and students who passed Class 12 two or more years before the exam year are not eligible — confirm the current year's notice before applying.

After the exam you file one campus-and-branch preference form (27 April – 1 June 2026, BITSAT-2026 official Admission Modality — First Degree). Allotment then runs through successive iterations — up to seven in 2026, between 20 June and 22 August — each publishing offers with a deadline to accept by paying the prescribed fee or advance. Miss a deadline and the seat moves on. Admission is purely merit-based on the BITSAT score. The one exception: first-rank holders of central and state boards get direct admission to the programme of their choice under the Board Toppers scheme, irrespective of BITSAT score.

BITS publishes one fee schedule for the Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses — tuition is identical across the three. Every figure below is from the official First Degree fee page for AY2026-27.

Tuition alone is ₹2,91,500 per semester (AY2026-27) — ₹5,83,000 across a year's two regular semesters, our arithmetic from the official per-semester figure.

The same page states that semester tuition, summer term and hostel fees are revised upward every year, and publishes the escalation itself: ₹3,06,000 per semester in AY2027-28 and ₹3,21,500 in AY2028-29. Budget on the escalated schedule, not the first-year number.

BITS publishes its own cutoffs — the closing BITSAT score per programme, per campus, after the final iteration. The official cutoff tool on bits-pilani.ac.in showed BITSAT-2022 as the latest year at last check (2026-08-20); more recent cycles are meant to appear on bitsadmission.com after each year's iterations close, but no verified BITSAT-2025 or BITSAT-2026 static cutoff table could be located on either official domain. Aggregator sites publish predicted 2026 ranges (roughly 300-320 for CSE across the three campuses), but predictions are not admissible as sourced figures on this page.

At Pilani, B.E. Computer Science closed 153 points above Civil in BITSAT-2022 (320 vs 167, official cutoff tool).

The ordering is stable even as absolute scores drift year to year: circuit branches sit between CSE and the core branches, and the same branch closes lower at the newer campuses — B.E. Computer Science closed at 286 at Goa and 279 at Hyderabad in BITSAT-2022. Note also that M.Sc. Economics closed at 247 and M.Sc. Mathematics and Physics at 214 (Pilani, BITSAT-2022) — relevant because of the documented dual-degree route described in the FAQ. The most reliable placement figures are the ones BITS itself submitted to NIRF (nirfindia.org, institute ID IR-E-U-0391, India Rankings 2025 submission — fetched directly on 2026-08-20, one batch year newer than the commonly cited 2024 filing). They cover the four-year UG programmes institution-wide — all Indian campuses and all branches pooled together.

The UG median salary BITS reported to NIRF for the 2023-24 batch was ₹18,00,000 — a genuine dip from ₹19,00,000 for 2022-23, not a continuation of an unbroken rise (NIRF India Rankings 2025, BITS Pilani submission). Read that as real batch-to-batch variation in hiring conditions, the honest picture rather than a smoothed marketing line.

What is not verifiable from official documents: branch-wise medians — not in the NIRF submission — and highest-package claims — NIRF does not collect them, and media reports are not admissible here. Read the median as a blended number: Computer Science at Pilani and Civil at Hyderabad sit inside the same ₹18,00,000. Also note the 2022-23 and 2023-24 rows show 303 and 283 students respectively opting for higher studies — placement counts exclude them.

Hostel charges follow the same official schedule at all three Indian campuses: ₹36,000 per regular semester and ₹18,000 for a summer term (AY2026-27). On top sit a ₹10,000 per-semester mess and electricity advance and ₹12,000 of other advances, both adjustable against actual bills. Actual annual mess spend is billed on consumption and settled against these advances, per the official fee page. Note that the official escalation schedule applies to hostel fees too, not just tuition.

The fee schedule lists these charges for on-campus students, and the admission portal opens a specific online window for paying hostel and related charges once a seat is accepted — the payment window dates are published on bitsadmission.com each cycle.

The Pilani campus address is Vidya Vihar, Pilani, Rajasthan 333031. Pilani is a small town in northern Rajasthan, and daily life is campus-centred by necessity — there is no metro city outside the gate. For a four-year residential run, that suits students who want immersion; it does not suit students who expect city internships during term or weekend trips home from a nearby urban hub.

The comparison that matters is not rankings — it is which trade-off you are making.

• On cost: COEP Pune and VJTI Mumbai are government institutes admitted through MHT-CET, and their fee levels are in a different band altogether. If the four-year budget is the binding constraint, they are the honest first choice; BITS is a premium-fee decision justified by its national recruiter pool and residential experience.
• On exam route: COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai, PICT Pune, SPIT Mumbai and VIT Pune all run through MHT-CET (with JEE routes in some cases). BITSAT is a separate preparation track with two sessions — a genuine second chance in the same admission season, which no CET college offers.
• On location and life: PICT Pune and SPIT Mumbai sit inside major IT job markets, and many students commute from home. BITS Pilani is the opposite proposition: fully campus-centred years in a small town, with placements brought to campus rather than a city around you.
• On flexibility: BITS's documented M.Sc. dual-degree route has no equivalent at the Maharashtra colleges, where the branch you are allotted is effectively the branch you graduate in.

If the decision is budget-first, start with COEP Pune or VJTI Mumbai. If it is software-market-proximity-first, weigh PICT Pune and SPIT Mumbai. If it is brand, national pool and campus immersion — and the fee schedule is comfortable — BITS is the different animal on this list.
