1. NMIMS Mumbai: What It Is and Where It Stands
SVKM's NMIMS was established in 1981 by Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal, a public charitable education trust, and was declared a Deemed-to-be-University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 on 13 January 2003 (NMIMS official "About SBM" page). The School of Business Management (SBM) is its business school, on the Vile Parle (West) campus in Mumbai.
Because NMIMS is a deemed-to-be-university, it is private and self-financed. It does not sit inside the Maharashtra CAP counselling run by DTE for MBA seats, and its own admission handout states in plain words that there is no management quota at NMIMS for MBA programmes.
What SBM Mumbai runs, per the official Admission Handout for Management Programs (NMAT 2025, batch 2026-2028):
- MBA β concentrations in Business Environment & Strategy, Finance, Marketing, Communications, Operations and Data Science, Economics, and Human Resources & Behavioural Sciences
- MBA Human Resources
- MBA Business Analytics
- MBA (Digital Transformation)
- MBA Pharmaceutical Management
SBM also runs MBA NEx, a weekend executive MBA of two years requiring a minimum of four years' full-time work experience, a part-time MBA, and doctoral programmes.
On external assessment: NIRF ranked SVKM's NMIMS (institute ID IR-M-N-10) 21st in Management in 2024 with a score of 60.96, and 24th in 2025 with a score of 60.99 (nirfindia.org). SBM's own Final Placement Report 2023-24 records a successful AACSB reaccreditation outcome in 2023, and the school's accreditations page lists NAAC A++ with 3.67 CGPA in the third cycle for the Mumbai campus.
2. Admission Route: How You Actually Get In
There is one route into the full-time MBA at SBM Mumbai: NMAT by GMAC. The official handout makes it a two-step registration β register and pay at nmat.org first, then complete a separate NMIMS application at nmims.edu using your NMAT registration number. Skipping the second step means you are not considered at all.
Two rules catch people out. First, in the handout's own words, "NMIMS only accepts the score of the first NMAT examination attempted by the candidate". NMAT itself permits retakes; NMIMS ignores them. Second, you must register with NMIMS before your scheduled NMAT exam date, and you must list at least five programme preferences.
For batch 2026-2028 the NMIMS application fee was Rs. 2,900 (no GST), online only, with the window open from 1 August 2025 to 10 October 2025 (NMIMS Admission Handout for Management Programs, NMAT 2025).
Stage 2 is shortlisting on your NMAT sectional and total score β a lopsided score can fail even at a respectable aggregate β followed by an in-person process. The 2026-2028 handout describes it as "a competency test, and Personal Interview". SBM's own 2024-cycle note describes the same stage as a computer-based Written Analytical Test, a WATSON test and a Personal Interview at the Mumbai campus, running four to four and a half hours.
The final merit list is built from the NMAT score, personal interview, competency test, work experience and past academic performance. NMIMS does not publish a percentage weightage for those components, so any split you see quoted elsewhere is a reconstruction, not an NMIMS figure.
3. Fee Structure (What Is Officially Published)
NMIMS publishes MBA fees per annum, not as a programme total. The most recent officially published schedule appears in the Admission Handout for Management Programs (NMAT 2025), where it is labelled "Fees for academic year (2025-2026) for information only".
In one line: the Mumbai full-time MBA was Rs. 13,50,000 per annum for AY2025-26, with the specialised Mumbai MBAs between Rs. 9,00,000 and Rs. 11,50,000 and the other campuses lower.
| Programme | Fee per annum (AY2025-26, NMIMS Admission Handout, NMAT 2025) |
|---|---|
| MBA, Mumbai | Rs. 13,50,000 |
| MBA HR, Mumbai | Rs. 12,75,000 |
| MBA Business Analytics / MBA Digital Transformation, Mumbai | Rs. 11,50,000 |
| MBA Pharmaceutical Management, Mumbai | Rs. 9,00,000 |
| MBA Bengaluru / Hyderabad / Navi Mumbai | Rs. 11,00,000 |
| MBA Indore | Rs. 9,50,000 |
The same handout states: "The Fees for the academic year 2026-2027 will be intimated at the time of admission in the offer letter." So the figure that will actually apply to a 2026 entrant is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27] until that letter arrives.
For trajectory, the previous handout recorded MBA and MBA HR fees of Rs. 12,50,000 for AY2024-25 (NMIMS Admission Handout, NMAT MBA 2025).
We do not publish a two-year total here. NMIMS states a per-annum figure and sets the following year at admission; multiplying one by two would be our arithmetic, not the institute's. Ask admissions for the instalment schedule attached to the offer letter β that is the document an education lender prices against.
4. Cutoffs and Shortlisting: How to Read Them
NMIMS does not publish an NMAT cutoff. The handout says only that "Shortlisting based on NMAT sectional and total score will be done", and that "The decision regarding the cut-off of the merit list will solely lie with NMIMS." So the score that earns a call this cycle is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]. Any percentile floor you see on a listing site is somebody's reconstruction from candidate reports, not an NMIMS publication.
Three things you can act on instead:
- Sectional score matters, not just the total. Shortlisting is explicitly on both, so a weak section is a real risk even at a strong aggregate.
- Only your first NMAT attempt counts for NMIMS. Plan attempt one as the real one rather than a warm-up.
- Work experience of more than one year is given weightage in the final merit list, and it has to be verifiable. The handout requires the employer to appear in both the GSTIN and TAN databases, excludes internships, apprenticeships, traineeships, family business and self-employment, and states that a third party verifies the documents.
On seats, the handout for batch 2025-2027 listed 600 seats for MBA Mumbai, 120 each for MBA HR, MBA Business Analytics and MBA Pharmaceutical Management, and 60 for MBA (Digital Transformation) β all marked "for information only" and subject to statutory approvals. The 2026-2028 handout drops the seat table, so the current sanctioned figure is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]. NIRF records a sanctioned PG two-year intake of 600 for both 2022-23 and 2023-24. The handout also states that 30% of seats in NMIMS MBA programmes are offered to female candidates.
5. Placements: What Is Verifiable
In one line: SBM's own report publishes an average and NIRF publishes a median, and for the same graduating year the two differ by around five lakh β the median is the number to borrow against.
| Graduating academic year | Median salary of placed graduates | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2021-22 | Rs. 19,20,000 | NIRF 2024, SVKM's NMIMS submission |
| 2022-23 | Rs. 21,35,000 | NIRF 2024 and NIRF 2025, SVKM's NMIMS submissions |
| 2023-24 | Rs. 20,00,000 | NIRF 2025, SVKM's NMIMS submission |
The NIRF figure is institution-level, covering NMIMS's two-year PG programmes. The same 2025 submission records 600 students graduating and 600 placed for 2023-24.
SBM's own Final Placement Report 2023-24 reports, for MBA Core: average CTC Rs. 25.13 lakh, highest CTC Rs. 67.70 lakh, 168 recruiters, 37% of the batch placed through pre-placement offers, and 96% placement. For MBA HR it reports an average CTC of Rs. 18.64 lakh, 46 recruiters, 27% placed through PPOs and 90% placed.
Read the gap honestly. Rs. 25.13 lakh is an average for MBA Core alone; Rs. 20,00,000 is a median across all two-year PG students in the same year. An average is dragged upward by a small number of very large offers, and the report's own highest CTC of Rs. 67.70 lakh shows how far that tail stretches. The two numbers are not like-for-like, and the median is the safer planning input.
The most recent placement report published on SBM's site is 2023-24. Figures for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 batches are [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27].
6. Campus, Hostel and Living Costs
SBM sits on the NMIMS Mumbai campus at V. L. Mehta Road, Vile Parle (West), Mumbai 400 056 β a dense residential and commercial suburb close to the domestic airport and on the Western line.
On accommodation, NMIMS's own campus-life page states it runs "two full-fledged hostels and four rented residential accommodations (taken care of by the University) in Mumbai, separately for boys and girls", and that "while the allotment is done on a first come first serve basis, outstation students are given the preference." Accommodation is therefore not guaranteed with admission.
From the university's own hostel application form and rules:
- First-year students apply only through the online hostel portal; the printed form is for second year onwards.
- Allotment is valid for one academic year β ten months from the start of the course β and a fresh application is required each year.
- Room allotment is random, with no roommate choice and no prior reservation, and the allotted address is put up shortly before classes begin.
- Mess membership is compulsory where a mess is provided; the rented residential flats do not have mess facilities.
- Hostel fees are refunded only if the NMIMS admission itself is cancelled: Rs. 3,000 is deducted before the course starts, and there is no refund after it starts.
The current hostel fee is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27], and NMIMS states the fee may change each year. The last schedule published in that form was for AY2019-20 β Rs. 2,50,000 for ten months for MBA students in the two main non-AC hostels, Rs. 3,00,000 for air-conditioned accommodation, Rs. 2,25,000 for non-AC residential flats, plus a Rs. 10,000 refundable security deposit. That is seven years old and is history, not a quote. We publish no estimate for food, transport or living costs in Vile Parle, because NMIMS publishes none.
7. Who Should NOT Choose NMIMS Mumbai
This is a strong school with a narrow, expensive, exam-gated door. It is the wrong choice for some people, and the institute's own documents tell you who.
- If your plan is to sit NMAT two or three times and submit the best score. NMIMS counts only the first attempt. If you cannot peak on attempt one, a CAT-based or multi-attempt-friendly school gives you a fairer shot.
- If your funding depends on a state quota, a CAP allotment or a government fee-reimbursement route. NMIMS is a deemed-to-be-university outside the Maharashtra CAP process, and its handout is explicit that no management quota exists.
- If your loan maths only works at the average CTC. The published median for the most recent NIRF-reported cohort sits materially below the reported MBA Core average. Build the EMI on the median; if the plan collapses without the average, the fit is wrong.
- If you want a residential campus experience. Vile Parle is a dense Mumbai suburb, hostel allotment is first come first served with outstation preference, some accommodation is in rented flats without a mess, and that cost sits on top of a per-annum tuition figure among the higher ones in the country.
- If your work experience cannot be documented to a third party's satisfaction. Family business, self-employment, cash salary, traineeships and internships are all excluded, and the employer must appear in the GSTIN and TAN databases.
- If your target sector barely features in SBM's own placement report. The 2023-24 report is sector-by-sector and specific β read it before assuming your function is well served.
None of this makes the school weak. It makes it specific, which is a different thing, and far easier to plan around before you register than after the offer letter lands.
8. How NMIMS Mumbai Compares
Compare on axes, not on a league table. Four names worth placing beside NMIMS Mumbai: SPJIMR Mumbai, JBIMS Mumbai, IIM Mumbai and SIBM Pune.
Entrance route breadth. NMIMS is single-door β NMAT by GMAC only, first attempt only. The peers above use different exams or different combinations, so your exam calendar, not your preference, often decides which of them is realistically open to you. Pull each institute's own admission handout and confirm the accepted exam before you build a shortlist; do not take an aggregator's word for it.
Fee scale and how it is disclosed. NMIMS publishes a per-annum figure and defers the following year's to the offer letter. Some peers publish a full programme fee up front. That difference matters when you size a loan, because a lender wants a total and a schedule, not a per-annum number and a promise.
Disclosure quality. NMIMS gives you two independent numbers β its own report's average and NIRF's median for the same institution. That is more than several peers publish. When you compare, insist on like for like: median against median, same graduating year, or the comparison is theatre.
Cohort profile. SBM's 2023-24 report puts the MBA Core batch at an average age of 23.8 years with 26 months of average work experience β a young cohort by design. If you are entering with five or six years behind you, check whether that peer group is the one you want to spend two years and a large fee alongside.
Check affordability before choice filling
Admission route, eligibility and preference order come first. As one decision checkpoint, enter the loan you may need to see the EMI and total interest before locking a college in your counselling choices.
Standard reducing-balance arithmetic on the numbers you enter β your actual rate and moratorium terms depend on the lender. The 40% ceiling is this site's own ROI rule: an EMI above 40% of take-home leaves nothing for rent, food or savings.

Frequently asked questions
Which entrance exam does NMIMS Mumbai accept for the full-time MBA?
Only NMAT by GMAC. The official Admission Handout for Management Programs lists NMAT as mandatory for MBA Mumbai and for every other full-time MBA at NMIMS, and states that NMIMS accepts only the score of your first NMAT attempt. You must also complete a separate NMIMS application using your NMAT registration number, before your scheduled exam date.
Do I need work experience to apply to NMIMS SBM Mumbai?
No. Eligibility is a bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks in the aggregate. But the handout says work experience of more than one year is given weightage in the final merit list, and it must be verifiable: the employer has to appear in both the GSTIN and TAN databases, and internships, traineeships, family business and self-employment do not count.
How is the shortlist decided, and what happens in the second stage?
Shortlisting is on your NMAT sectional and total score, so a lopsided profile can fail at a decent aggregate. Shortlisted candidates attend an in-person stage described in the current handout as a competency test and personal interview. The final merit list combines NMAT score, interview, competency test, work experience and past academics. NMIMS publishes no percentage weightage for these components.
Is hostel accommodation guaranteed at NMIMS Mumbai?
No. NMIMS states it runs two full-fledged hostels plus four rented residential accommodations in Mumbai, separately for boys and girls, and that allotment is first come first served with preference given to outstation students. First-year students apply through the online hostel portal. Allotment lasts one academic year of ten months, and a fresh application is needed for the next year.
How do I fund the fees, and what do lenders and scholarships need?
NMIMS publishes MBA fees per annum and says the applicable year's figure is intimated in the offer letter, so that letter and its instalment schedule are what an education lender prices against. Ask admissions for both in writing. SBM's MBA programme page also lists a need-cum-merit scholarship supported by the Mirae Asset Foundation; confirm the current terms and eligibility there.
How should I verify the latest NMIMS Mumbai admission route?
Start with the entrance and counselling route published by the institute or competent authority. Then match the current prospectus, application notice and counselling schedule on the official authority or institute website. A route from an older cycle should not be assumed to remain unchanged.
How should I read the NMIMS Mumbai cutoff shown on this page?
Read the exam, year, round, category, quota, branch and closing-rank or percentile label together. A cutoff from another category or an earlier round is not a promise of admission in the current cycle.
How do I confirm the complete fee for NMIMS Mumbai?
Use the current official fee notice and add tuition, development or university charges, deposits, hostel, mess and other compulsory costs. Ask for the payable amount and refund terms in writing before transferring money.
Extended admission FAQs
Do placement figures guarantee an outcome at NMIMS Mumbai?
No. A highest, average, median or placement-rate figure describes a particular batch and methodology. Prefer a completed, dated report with batch size and branch-level context; it cannot guarantee an individual salary or job.
Can anyone guarantee direct admission to NMIMS Mumbai?
No counsellor can override eligibility, merit, counselling or the institute's published process. Use only official portals and receipts, and do not pay an individual who promises a confirmed seat outside the documented route.
Which documents should I prepare for NMIMS Mumbai admission?
Keep the current exam scorecard, identity and nationality proof, Class 10 and 12 records, leaving or transfer certificate, allotment letter and payment receipt. Domicile, category, income, NCL, EWS, migration, gap or NRI documents apply only where the current authority requires them.
What should I compare before placing NMIMS Mumbai in my preference list?
Compare the exact branch or programme, admission probability, total cost, location, accreditation, published outcomes and a realistic fallback option. Never list a college you would be unable or unwilling to join if allotted.
What if a current NMIMS Mumbai figure is still unverified?
Treat it as pending rather than filling the gap with an aggregator estimate. Use the previous completed cycle only as historical context and wait for the competent authority or institute to publish the current figure.
How current is the information on this NMIMS Mumbai page?
The page shows its publication or update date and keeps changing figures tied to an academic year. No page-specific primary source is registered yet, so current figures require direct verification.
How can Future Career Guidance help with NMIMS Mumbai admission?
We help interpret eligibility, compare realistic options, organise documents and build a preference or application plan. We do not guarantee allotment, bypass merit or collect unofficial cash premiums for seats.
Which source takes priority if two NMIMS Mumbai figures conflict?
Use the newest document issued by the competent counselling authority, regulator or institute for the same year, quota and programme. A dated primary document takes priority over an undated webpage, brochure summary or third-party listing.
