VIT Vellore: What It Is and Where It Stands
A deemed-to-be university since 2001, running its own entrance exam and counselling entirely outside state or central systems.
VIT's own About Us page states it was established in 1984 as a self-financing institution called Vellore Engineering College, and that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development conferred university status on it in 2001. It therefore operates as a deemed-to-be university, not a college affiliated to a state technical university — which is the single fact that explains everything about its admission process. It sets its own entrance exam, ranks candidates itself, and runs its own counselling outside any state CET cell or JoSAA seat matrix.
The campus address on the university's own UGC filing is Katpadi – Thiruvalam Road, Vellore – 632 014, Tamil Nadu (2024-25). That same filing lists VIT-Chennai as an off-campus of the Vellore institution.

- 19 B.Tech programmes are listed for the Vellore campus (AY2026-27), including Computer Science and Engineering plus five named CSE specialisations, Electronics and Communication, VLSI, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical and Biotechnology.

Admission Route: How You Actually Get a Seat
VITEEE only — one centralised counselling across four campuses, and no changes once allotted.
There is one route for Indian applicants: VITEEE, VIT's own entrance exam. There is no state CAP round, no COMEDK, no JoSAA counselling. The university ranks you and allots the seat itself.
From the official VITEEE 2026 site (AY2026-27):
- Eligibility: date of birth on or after 1 July 2004; 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology, with at least 50% in Mathematics or Biology.
- Exam window: 28 April to 3 May 2026 (stated as tentative), duration 2 hours 30 minutes.
- Pattern: 125 multiple-choice questions — Mathematics or Biology 40, Physics 35, Chemistry 35, Aptitude 10, English 5. Four marks for a correct answer, minus one for a wrong one.
- Application: last date 12 April 2026; application cost ₹1,350, or the equivalent of USD 90 for centres abroad.
- Results and the start of counselling: both stated as the second week of May 2026, tentatively.
Counselling is a single centralised online process covering VIT-Vellore, VIT-Chennai, VIT-AP and VIT-Bhopal. You log in with your VITEEE application number, submit options for campus, programme and fee category, and the allotment is made on your rank against what is still available.
The clause that costs students money when they skip it is on the same page: once allotted, there is no sliding, no category upgradation, no change of campus and no change of branch. Your first allotment is the seat you are taking. Plan the option list before the portal opens, not during it.

Group A covers Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Chemical and Civil Engineering. Group B covers the Computer Science family, Electronics, Mechanical and similar programmes — the branches most applicants are chasing, and the more expensive column. Group C is Civil Engineering in collaboration with L&T. All figures are from the same official page, headed Academic Fee 2026-2027.
Added to first-year tuition is a one-time refundable caution deposit of ₹5,000 (same source). Hostel and mess are entirely separate and are covered in the hostel section below.
We do not publish a four-year total here. VIT states the annual figure, not a consolidated degree cost, and multiplying an annual fee by four assumes no revision across four years — which is an assumption, not a published figure. Ask for the current year's circular before you commit.
Cutoff Trends: How to Read Them
No branch-wise closing rank exists as a public document — confirmed again — but the scholarship ladder is officially rank-linked.
VIT does not publish a branch-wise opening and closing rank table. Nothing on vit.ac.in or the VITEEE portal contains one as of 20 August 2026. Every ranked cutoff list circulating for VIT is somebody's reconstruction from student reports, and we will not reproduce a number we cannot trace to the university.

What IS officially rank-linked is the scholarship ladder, from VIT's own scholarship page (AY2025-26): VITEEE ranks 1–10 receive a 100% tuition fee waiver for all four years, ranks 11–50 a 75% waiver, ranks 51–100 a 50% waiver, and ranks 101–500 a 25% waiver.
The reason a single VIT cutoff number does not exist is structural. Three variables move at the same time — campus, programme and fee category — so the same branch closes at very different ranks depending on which campus and which fee slab you opted for. A rank that will not reach CSE at Vellore in Category 1 may reach it comfortably in a higher category, and the same rank behaves differently at Chennai, AP or Bhopal. Judge your rank against the option list you are willing to pay for, not against a single number.
Placements: What Is Verifiable
The NIRF-filed median has stayed flat between ₹8-9 lakh for three straight years — not the rising story often assumed.
VIT's own NIRF submission is the only placement data on this page, and it reports university-level medians, not branch-wise packages.

Read the median, not the headline. The median for placed graduates has sat between ₹8,00,000 and ₹9,00,000 across three consecutive years — flat, and roughly half of every placed batch earned less than that. For 2023-24, 4,031 placed out of 5,964 graduating is 67.6%; that percentage is our arithmetic on VIT's two official figures, not a number VIT itself publishes. As of 20 August 2026 there is no newer NIRF filing: the ₹8.99 lakh 2023-24 median is still the latest official figure.
Note also that 1,255 students went to higher studies in 2023-24, so the placement pool is not the whole batch.
What stays unverified: branch-wise medians, the highest package, recruiter-wise offer counts, and any split between the Vellore campus and the Chennai off-campus. VIT does not publish these in the published documents, checked again 2026-08-20. If a site shows you a branch-wise VIT package table, ask it for the source document.
Hostel & Campus Life
Hostel adds roughly a year of tuition on top — published room-type by room-type.
VIT's campus life page states the Vellore hostels run 21 blocks for men and 11 for women, accommodating over 30,000 residents a year, with AC and non-AC single and shared options, and vegetarian, non-vegetarian and special mess plans.

Every row carries a ₹15,000 non-refundable admission fee and a ₹15,000 refundable caution deposit, which is what the third column adds. The ladies hostel circular also records that the hostel fee includes laundry up to 44 washes, that mess plans can be changed monthly with a differential payment, that the fee is subject to annual escalation, and that no refund applies on downgrading a room or mess plan. Budget the tuition and hostel lines together, not separately.
How VIT Vellore Compares
VITEEE is a genuine second door, not a substitute for state counselling — treat both as parallel applications.
Compare on the axis that actually decides it, not on reputation.
On admission route, VIT Vellore is the outlier in this set. COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai, PICT Pune, SPIT Mumbai and VIT Pune are all reached through Maharashtra's state counselling process, where you fill preferences across many institutes in one system and a poor result still leaves you inside that system. VITEEE is a separate exam, a separate application fee and a separate calendar — it is an additional shot, not a substitute for your state process. Students who prepare for both keep two independent doors open; students who bet only on VITEEE have one.
On cost, the Maharashtra government-aided and autonomous institutes in this list occupy a different bracket entirely from VIT's published category structure. If the family conversation is about total four-year outlay, that comparison is usually decisive before any ranking is discussed.
On scale and profile, VIT is a deemed university with a very large residential intake and a national and international student mix; COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai, PICT Pune and SPIT Mumbai are smaller, city-embedded institutions where most of the cohort is from within the state.
On geography and internships, PICT Pune, VIT Pune, COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai and SPIT Mumbai sit inside two large metro job markets. VIT Vellore is a campus-first experience.
