QUICK OVERVIEW

VIT Vellore admission overview

VIT Vellore admission guidance for 2026: eligibility, entrance route, cutoffs, fees, placements, documents and choice-filling support.

Evidence note: Use the academic year shown beside changing figures and verify the linked official document before payment or choice locking.

1. VIT Vellore: What It Is and Where It Stands

VIT's own About Us page states it was established in 1984 as a self-financing institution called Vellore Engineering College, and that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development conferred university status on it in 2001. It therefore operates as a deemed-to-be university, not a college affiliated to a state technical university β€” which is the single fact that explains everything about its admission process. It sets its own entrance exam, ranks candidates itself, and runs its own counselling outside any state CET cell or JoSAA seat matrix.

The campus address on the university's own UGC filing is Katpadi – Thiruvalam Road, Vellore – 632 014, Tamil Nadu (UGC Mandatory Disclosure 2024-25, VIT Vellore). That same filing lists VIT-Chennai as an off-campus of the Vellore institution.

What is verified, with the source that carries it:

  • NAAC: A++ with a CGPA of 3.66, fourth cycle (UGC Mandatory Disclosure 2024-25, VIT Vellore).
  • NIRF 2025 Engineering: rank 16, score 65.25 (NIRF 2025, nirfindia.org engineering ranking table, institute ID IR-E-U-0490).
  • NIRF 2024: Engineering 11th, University 10th, Overall 19th (UGC Mandatory Disclosure 2024-25, VIT Vellore).
  • 19 B.Tech programmes are listed for the Vellore campus (AY2026-27, VIT official Vellore engineering programmes page), including Computer Science and Engineering plus five named CSE specialisations, Electronics and Communication, VLSI, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical and Biotechnology.

NBA programme accreditation is not stated on any official page we opened, so we do not claim it here.

2. Admission Route: How You Actually Get a Seat

There is one route for Indian applicants: VITEEE, VIT's own entrance exam. There is no state CAP round, no COMEDK, no JoSAA counselling. The university ranks you and allots the seat itself.

From the official VITEEE 2026 site (AY2026-27):

  • Eligibility: date of birth on or after 1 July 2004; 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/Biology, with at least 50% in Mathematics or Biology.
  • Exam window: 28 April to 3 May 2026 (stated as tentative), duration 2 hours 30 minutes.
  • Pattern: 125 multiple-choice questions β€” Mathematics or Biology 40, Physics 35, Chemistry 35, Aptitude 10, English 5. Four marks for a correct answer, minus one for a wrong one.
  • Application: last date 12 April 2026; application cost β‚Ή1,350, or the equivalent of USD 90 for centres abroad.
  • Results and the start of counselling: both stated as the second week of May 2026, tentatively.

Counselling is a single centralised online process covering VIT-Vellore, VIT-Chennai, VIT-AP and VIT-Bhopal. You log in with your VITEEE application number, submit options for campus, programme and fee category, and the allotment is made on your rank against what is still available.

The clause that costs students money when they skip it is on the same page: once allotted, there is no sliding, no category upgradation, no change of campus and no change of branch. Your first allotment is the seat you are taking. Plan the option list before the portal opens, not during it.

3. Fee Structure (What Is Officially Published)

In one line: VIT publishes B.Tech tuition as three programme groups crossed with six fee categories, and the category you opt for during counselling is what you pay for all four years.

Annual B.Tech tuition, AY2026-27, VIT official UG fee structure page:

Fee categoryGroup A (β‚Ή/year)Group B (β‚Ή/year)Group C (β‚Ή/year)
Category 0 (scholarship)000
Category 11,73,0001,95,0002,07,000
Category 22,32,0003,04,0002,66,000
Category 33,40,0004,02,0003,74,000
Category 43,65,0004,45,0003,99,000
Category 5 (no scholarship)3,95,0004,90,0004,29,000

Group A covers Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Chemical and Civil Engineering. Group B covers the Computer Science family, Electronics, Mechanical and similar programmes β€” the branches most applicants are chasing, and the more expensive column. Group C is Civil Engineering in collaboration with L&T. All figures are from the same official page, headed Academic Fee 2026-2027.

Added to first-year tuition is a one-time refundable caution deposit of β‚Ή5,000 (same source). Hostel and mess are entirely separate and are covered in section 6.

We do not publish a four-year total here. VIT states the annual figure, not a consolidated degree cost, and multiplying an annual fee by four assumes no revision across four years β€” which is an assumption, not a published figure. Ask for the current year's circular before you commit.

4. Cutoff Trends: How to Read Them

VIT does not publish a branch-wise opening and closing rank table. Nothing on vit.ac.in or the VITEEE portal that we opened contains one. Every ranked cutoff list circulating for VIT is somebody's reconstruction from student reports, and we will not reproduce a number we cannot trace to the university.

Branch (Vellore campus)Closing VITEEE rankSource status
Computer Science and Engineering[FIGURE MISSING β€” AY2026-27]Not published by VIT
CSE specialisations (AI/ML, Data Science, Cyber Security)[FIGURE MISSING β€” AY2026-27]Not published by VIT
Electronics and Communication Engineering[FIGURE MISSING β€” AY2026-27]Not published by VIT
Mechanical / Civil / Chemical[FIGURE MISSING β€” AY2026-27]Not published by VIT

What is officially rank-linked is the scholarship ladder, from VIT's own scholarship page (AY2025-26): VITEEE ranks 1–10 receive a 100% tuition fee waiver for all four years, ranks 11–50 a 75% waiver, ranks 51–100 a 50% waiver, and ranks 101–500 a 25% waiver.

The reason a single VIT cutoff number does not exist is structural. Three variables move at the same time β€” campus, programme and fee category β€” so the same branch closes at very different ranks depending on which campus and which fee slab you opted for. A rank that will not reach CSE at Vellore in Category 1 may reach it comfortably in a higher category, and the same rank behaves differently at Chennai, AP or Bhopal. Judge your rank against the option list you are willing to pay for, not against a single number.

5. Placements: What Is Verifiable

In one line: VIT's own NIRF submission is the only placement data on this page, and it reports university-level medians, not branch-wise packages.

UG four-year programmes, from VIT's data submission for India Rankings 2025 (NIRF 2025, VIT submission, institute ID IR-E-U-0490):

Graduating yearGraduated in minimum stipulated timePlacedMedian salary of placed graduatesSelected for higher studies
2021-226,1774,212β‚Ή8,00,000957
2022-237,0534,923β‚Ή9,00,0001,051
2023-245,9644,031β‚Ή8,99,0001,255

Read the median, not the headline. The median for placed graduates has sat between β‚Ή8,00,000 and β‚Ή9,00,000 across three consecutive years β€” flat, and roughly half of every placed batch earned less than that. For 2023-24, 4,031 placed out of 5,964 graduating is 67.6%; that percentage is our arithmetic on VIT's two official figures, not a number VIT itself publishes.

Note also that 1,255 students went to higher studies in 2023-24, so the placement pool is not the whole batch.

What stays unverified: branch-wise medians, the highest package, recruiter-wise offer counts, and any split between the Vellore campus and the Chennai off-campus. VIT does not publish these in the documents we opened β€” treated as [FIGURE MISSING β€” AY2026-27]. If a site shows you a branch-wise VIT package table, ask it for the source document.

6. Hostel & Campus Life

VIT's campus life page states the Vellore hostels run 21 blocks for men and 11 for women, accommodating over 30,000 residents a year, with AC and non-AC single and shared options, and vegetarian, non-vegetarian and special mess plans.

In one line: hostel is a second fee line of roughly the same order as a year's tuition, and VIT publishes it room-type by room-type. Selected rows for first-year students, Vellore campus, Fall and Winter Semester 2026-27, Indian category, from VIT's official hostel fee circulars:

Room typeRoom & mess fee (β‚Ή)Total incl. admission fee + caution deposit (β‚Ή)
Men β€” 6-bed non-AC, veg mess1,20,7001,50,700
Men β€” 4-bed AC, veg mess1,56,3001,86,300
Men β€” 2-bed AC, special mess2,00,4002,30,400
Women β€” B Block, 4-bed non-AC, veg mess1,26,2001,56,200
Women β€” F Block, 6-bed AC, veg mess1,47,1001,77,100
Women β€” G Block, 6-bed non-APT, veg mess1,93,2002,23,200

Every row carries a β‚Ή15,000 non-refundable admission fee and a β‚Ή15,000 refundable caution deposit, which is what the third column adds. The ladies hostel circular also records that the hostel fee includes laundry up to 44 washes, that mess plans can be changed monthly with a differential payment, that the fee is subject to annual escalation, and that no refund applies on downgrading a room or mess plan. Budget the tuition and hostel lines together, not separately.

7. Who Should NOT Choose VIT Vellore

Do not choose it on budget alone. A Group B branch in Category 1 is β‚Ή1,95,000 a year and Category 5 is β‚Ή4,90,000 (AY2026-27, VIT official UG fee structure), and hostel adds β‚Ή1,20,700 to β‚Ή2,00,400 in room and mess for the first year. If your family's ceiling is a government-fee seat, a state-quota college through your home CET is a fundamentally different financial decision, and VIT will not become affordable through counselling strategy.

Do not choose it if you need branch certainty at the last minute. VIT states plainly that after allotment there is no sliding, no category upgradation and no change of campus or branch. A student who plans to "get in and switch later" is planning against the published rule.

Do not choose it if you want a small cohort. VIT's own NIRF 2025 submission reports a sanctioned UG four-year intake of 8,190 for AY2023-24 and 35,957 students in UG programmes. That is a large system with the strengths and the anonymity of a large system.

Do not choose it if branch-wise placement transparency is your deciding criterion β€” VIT publishes a university-level median, not a branch table, so you will be committing without that number.

And be honest about location. Vellore is a smaller Tamil Nadu city, not a metro. For a student who wants weekend access to a big-city internship market from day one, that is a real trade-off, not a detail.

8. How VIT Vellore Compares

Compare on the axis that actually decides it, not on reputation.

On admission route, VIT Vellore is the outlier in this set. COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai, PICT Pune, SPIT Mumbai and VIT Pune are all reached through Maharashtra's state counselling process, where you fill preferences across many institutes in one system and a poor result still leaves you inside that system. VITEEE is a separate exam, a separate application fee and a separate calendar β€” it is an additional shot, not a substitute for your state process. Students who prepare for both keep two independent doors open; students who bet only on VITEEE have one.

On cost, the Maharashtra government-aided and autonomous institutes in this list occupy a different bracket entirely from VIT's published category structure. If the family conversation is about total four-year outlay, that comparison is usually decisive before any ranking is discussed.

On scale and profile, VIT is a deemed university with a very large residential intake and a national and international student mix; COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai, PICT Pune and SPIT Mumbai are smaller, city-embedded institutions where most of the cohort is from within the state.

On geography and internships, PICT Pune, VIT Pune, COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai and SPIT Mumbai sit inside two large metro job markets. VIT Vellore is a campus-first experience.

Our usual advice: run your state counselling seriously and treat VITEEE as a genuine parallel option, then choose on fee and branch, not on brand.

Check affordability before choice filling

Admission route, eligibility and preference order come first. As one decision checkpoint, enter the loan you may need to see the EMI and total interest before locking a college in your counselling choices.

CALCULATORWhat will this loan actually cost you?
Monthly EMIβ‚Ή16,344
Total interestβ‚Ή3,72,894
Total repaidβ‚Ή13,72,894
Take-home needed (EMI ≀ 40%)β‚Ή40,860/mo

Standard reducing-balance arithmetic on the numbers you enter β€” your actual rate and moratorium terms depend on the lender. The 40% ceiling is this site's own ROI rule: an EMI above 40% of take-home leaves nothing for rent, food or savings.

Frequently asked questions

Which entrance exam do I need for B.Tech admission at VIT Vellore?

VITEEE, VIT's own entrance exam, is the route for Indian applicants. There is no state CAP round, no COMEDK and no JoSAA counselling involved. VIT ranks candidates on VITEEE and allots seats through its own centralised online counselling. NRI and foreign applicants apply through separate application portals listed on the official VIT admissions site.

How does VIT counselling work, and how many rounds are there?

Counselling is a single centralised online process covering the Vellore, Chennai, AP and Bhopal campuses. You log in with your VITEEE application number and submit options for campus, programme and fee category, and allotment is made on your rank against availability. VIT publishes the phase schedule and rank ranges on the counselling portal each year, so check it there rather than relying on last year's dates.

What documents do I need for the exam and for admission?

For the exam itself, VIT asks candidates to carry an original photo ID β€” Aadhaar, driving licence, PAN, passport, voter ID or school ID. The admission document list is issued with the seat allotment letter and is not published as a standing list, so download it from the counselling portal after allotment. Expect Class 10 and 12 originals, the VITEEE scorecard and category or income proofs where claimed.

Is hostel accommodation guaranteed, and how is a room allotted?

VIT's campus life page describes 21 men's blocks and 11 women's blocks at Vellore housing over 30,000 residents a year, with AC and non-AC shared and single options. Room and mess fees are published per room type in the official first-year hostel circular, and you choose the type when you apply for accommodation. Confirm current availability and the allotment window with the hostel office.

Can I change my branch or campus after the seat is allotted?

No. VIT states on the official VITEEE page that once a seat is allotted there is no sliding, no upgradation of fee category, no change of campus and no change of branch offered after admission. Build your option list carefully before counselling opens. For any programme change after joining, the academic office is the only authority to confirm whether a policy exists.

How should I verify the latest VIT Vellore admission route?

Start with the entrance and counselling route published by the institute or competent authority. Then match the current prospectus, application notice and counselling schedule on the official authority or institute website. A route from an older cycle should not be assumed to remain unchanged.

How should I read the VIT Vellore cutoff shown on this page?

Read the exam, year, round, category, quota, branch and closing-rank or percentile label together. A cutoff from another category or an earlier round is not a promise of admission in the current cycle.

How do I confirm the complete fee for VIT Vellore?

Use the current official fee notice and add tuition, development or university charges, deposits, hostel, mess and other compulsory costs. Ask for the payable amount and refund terms in writing before transferring money.

Extended admission FAQs

Do placement figures guarantee an outcome at VIT Vellore?

No. A highest, average, median or placement-rate figure describes a particular batch and methodology. Prefer a completed, dated report with batch size and branch-level context; it cannot guarantee an individual salary or job.

Can anyone guarantee direct admission to VIT Vellore?

No counsellor can override eligibility, merit, counselling or the institute's published process. Use only official portals and receipts, and do not pay an individual who promises a confirmed seat outside the documented route.

Which documents should I prepare for VIT Vellore admission?

Keep the current exam scorecard, identity and nationality proof, Class 10 and 12 records, leaving or transfer certificate, allotment letter and payment receipt. Domicile, category, income, NCL, EWS, migration, gap or NRI documents apply only where the current authority requires them.

What should I compare before placing VIT Vellore in my preference list?

Compare the exact branch or programme, admission probability, total cost, location, accreditation, published outcomes and a realistic fallback option. Never list a college you would be unable or unwilling to join if allotted.

What if a current VIT Vellore figure is still unverified?

Treat it as pending rather than filling the gap with an aggregator estimate. Use the previous completed cycle only as historical context and wait for the competent authority or institute to publish the current figure.

How current is the information on this VIT Vellore page?

The page shows its publication or update date and keeps changing figures tied to an academic year. No page-specific primary source is registered yet, so current figures require direct verification.

How can Future Career Guidance help with VIT Vellore admission?

We help interpret eligibility, compare realistic options, organise documents and build a preference or application plan. We do not guarantee allotment, bypass merit or collect unofficial cash premiums for seats.

Which source takes priority if two VIT Vellore figures conflict?

Use the newest document issued by the competent counselling authority, regulator or institute for the same year, quota and programme. A dated primary document takes priority over an undated webpage, brochure summary or third-party listing.
