1. KJ Somaiya: What It Is and Where It Stands
K J Somaiya Institute of Management — still widely searched as SIMSR — was established in 1981 under Somaiya Vidyavihar (KJSIM MBA Brochure, Batch 2026-28). It is not an affiliated college of Mumbai University. It is an institute of Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai, which the same brochure describes as established in 2019 and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). That single fact drives most of what follows on this page, starting with the admission route.
The campus is Somaiya Vidyavihar, Vidyavihar East, Mumbai 400077. On accreditation, the institute's own page states NAAC accreditation, AICTE and NBA recognition, and certification to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 29990:2010 by Bureau Veritas. It describes itself as a "Member of AACSB Accreditation" — membership of AACSB, which is not the same thing as holding AACSB accreditation, and worth reading precisely. UGC autonomous status is listed as extended from 2019-20 to 2028-29.
On rankings, KJSIM placed 65th in Management with a score of 51.28 (NIRF 2025 Management ranking, nirfindia.org), after 63rd in NIRF 2024 (KJSIM official NIRF page).
Programmes listed on the official site:
- MBA (2 years, full-time) — majors in Business Analytics & Data Science, Finance, HR (People Development), Marketing and Operations Management
- MBA Healthcare Management, MBA Sports Management and MBA Marketing Communications (2 years, full-time, 30 seats each)
- MBA Executive (15 months, full-time) and MBA for Working Executives (15 months, online)
- MCA, a dual-degree B.Tech & MBA, and PhD programmes across seven areas
2. Admission Route: How You Actually Get In
The most important thing about KJSIM admissions is what is absent from the list. Because the institute sits under a private university rather than under DTE Maharashtra, MAH MBA-CET is not among its accepted exams and there is no Maharashtra CAP counselling route into the MBA. You apply directly to the institute at applykjsim.somaiya.edu.
For MBA and MBA-Healthcare Management, the brochure lists qualifying scores from CAT 2025, XAT 2026, GMAT (scores valid 1 January 2023 to 20 January 2026), NMAT 2025 (first two attempts considered) and CMAT 2026. MBA-Sports Management additionally accepts MAT 2025, ATMA 2026, PERA-CET 2026 and CUET 2026. Eligibility is a minimum 50% aggregate in graduation from a recognised university. There is no minimum work-experience requirement.
Shortlisting runs on the qualifying exam score alone. The composite below decides the offer.
| Selection component | MBA | MBA-HCM |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance exam (CAT/XAT/GMAT/NMAT/CMAT) | 25% | 25% |
| Personal interview (competency based) | 25% | 25% |
| Academic profile | 15% | 15% |
| Written Ability Test (WAT) | 15% | 10% |
| Problem Situation Analysis (PSA) | 10% | 10% |
| Work experience | 10% | 10% |
| Additional qualification (HCM related) | — | 5% |
Source: KJSIM MBA Brochure, Batch 2026-28. One honest caveat: the live KJSIM MBA admission page currently shows a different MBA split (personal interview 30%, WAT 10%). Confirm which version is in force before planning around it.
The application fee is ₹3,000 for MBA and MBA-HCM and ₹1,000 for MBA-SM and MBA-MC, both non-refundable.
3. Fee Structure (What Is Officially Published)
KJSIM publishes a full line-item fee table in its Batch 2026-28 brochure, which is better disclosure than most Mumbai business schools offer. These are the MBA and MBA-Healthcare Management figures.
In one line: the published MBA fee for Batch 2026-28 is ₹11,52,000 in Year 1 and ₹12,35,500 in Year 2, of which ₹10,000 is a refundable caution deposit.
| Particulars | Year 1 (AY2026-27) | Year 2 (AY2027-28) |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fees | ₹9,86,000 | ₹10,65,000 |
| Development fees | ₹1,04,000 | ₹1,12,000 |
| Other fees | ₹39,000 | ₹39,500 |
| Examination fees | ₹13,000 | ₹14,000 |
| Convocation fees | — | ₹2,500 |
| Caution money deposit (refundable) | ₹10,000 | — |
| Alumni association fees | — | ₹2,500 |
| Total | ₹11,52,000 | ₹12,35,500 |
Source: KJSIM MBA Brochure, Batch 2026-28. Adding the institute's own two year-totals gives ₹23,87,500 across the programme — that addition is ours, not a figure KJSIM publishes as a programme total, and it excludes hostel, mess and living costs entirely.
Same source, other programmes: MBA-Sports Management ₹10,31,500 in Year 1 (including a ₹3,00,000 immersion fee) and ₹7,81,500 in Year 2; MBA-Marketing Communications ₹8,60,000 and ₹8,52,250. The live admission page lists MBA-SM Year 1 as ₹7,31,500, which is the brochure figure minus the immersion fee, and MBA-MC Year 2 as ₹8,52,500 rather than ₹8,52,250. Where two official sources differ, ask admissions to confirm in writing before you pay.
4. Cutoffs and Shortlisting: How to Read Them
KJSIM does not publish a percentile or score cutoff for its MBA. There is no official CAT-percentile threshold document on the institute's website, so any specific percentile figure quoted elsewhere is not sourced from KJSIM. The honest entry here is [FIGURE MISSING — AY2026-27], and the place to watch is the shortlist announcement on the official KJSIM MBA admission page.
What the institute does publish is the mechanism, which is more useful than a number. The brochure states that candidates are shortlisted based on qualifying exam scores — so the exam score is the gate to the interview stage. Past that gate the exam contributes 25% of the composite. Three quarters of the decision rests on things you control after results day: the interview, the written ability test, the problem situation analysis, your academic record and your work experience.
The class profile KJSIM publishes for MBA 2025-2027 shows who clears that composite:
- Work experience: freshers 55%, 1-2 years 31%, above 2 years 14%
- Academic background: commerce 27%, management 26%, engineering 23%, arts 12%, science and others 12%
- Gender: 57% male, 43% female
- Region: west 59%, north 22%, east 12%, south 7%
Round 1 dates published for Batch 2026-28: applications closed 20 January 2026, shortlist 6 February 2026, WAT 16-18 February, PSA and PI 20 February to 8 March, offer letters 1 April 2026, programme commencement 30 June 2026. A separate Round 2 runs for CMAT applicants, but the application deadline is common to all exams.
5. Placements: What Is Verifiable
Two official sources exist and they answer different questions. KJSIM's NIRF submissions carry the median; its placement brochure carries the top of the distribution. Neither publishes an average CTC for the MBA batch, so the average is [FIGURE MISSING — Batch 2024-26].
In one line: the median salary of placed graduates has held at ₹12,00,000 for two consecutive batches, while the top decile averaged ₹18.05 lakh.
| Graduating batch | Graduated in stipulated time | Placed | Median salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| AY2021-22 | 472 | 456 | ₹10,23,212 |
| AY2022-23 | 494 | 476 | ₹11,50,000 |
| AY2023-24 | 643 | 595 | ₹12,00,000 |
| AY2024-25 | 611 | 547 | ₹12,00,000 |
Source: NIRF 2025 and NIRF 2026 institute data submitted by K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management (IR-M-S-220), published on kjsim.somaiya.edu. Figures cover PG two-year programmes.
From the Batch 2023-25 final placement panel in the Batch 2026-28 brochure, marked provisional and subject to audit: highest salary ₹27.25 LPA, 204 recruiting companies, top 10% ₹18.05 LPA, top 20% ₹16.58 LPA, top 30% ₹15.61 LPA. Summer internships for Batch 2024-26: 145 companies, highest stipend ₹1,00,000 per month, average stipend for the top 100 ₹60,425 per month.
Read the gap honestly. The top-decile figure of ₹18.05 lakh sits about half again above the ₹12,00,000 median, and the median is what describes the middle of the class. Note too that KJSIM reports 547 of 611 graduates placed in AY2024-25 — a placed count, not a 100% claim.
6. Campus, Hostel and Living Costs
Student housing sits on the Somaiya Vidyavihar campus in two buildings — Sandipani for boys and Maitreyi for girls. Unusually for an Indian business school, KJSIM publishes a signed, dated hostel fee sheet, so these figures are firm rather than indicative.
In one line: a first-year triple-sharing hostel place costs ₹2,85,651 for AY2026-27, of which ₹30,000 is refundable deposits, with mess billed separately at ₹6,000 a month.
| Item | Triple sharing | Double sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation charges, AY2026-27 | ₹2,53,651 | ₹3,80,499 |
| Hostel deposit (refundable) | ₹25,000 | ₹25,000 |
| Mess deposit (refundable) | ₹5,000 | ₹5,000 |
| Registration fee | ₹2,000 | ₹2,000 |
| Total, first-year admission | ₹2,85,651 | ₹4,12,499 |
| Total, second year onwards | ₹2,55,651 | ₹3,82,499 |
Source: Sandipani and Maitreyi Hostel Fees Structure A.Y. 2026-27, dated 12 December 2025, Somaiya Vidyavihar Student Housing.
Mess fees are additional at ₹6,000 per month, payable by demand draft to the catering contractor at the time of hostel allotment; the sheet notes the total will vary with course duration. Hostel fees are paid through the Somaiya myaccount portal, and that portal's hostel tab only opens once admission fees are paid — so a hostel place is not confirmed at the moment you accept the offer. Costs beyond hostel and mess — travel, books, laptop, interview travel — are not published by the institute: [FIGURE MISSING — AY2026-27].
7. Who Should NOT Choose KJ Somaiya
Reconsider if the arithmetic does not work. Two years of published MBA fees add to ₹23,87,500, and a triple-sharing hostel place adds ₹2,85,651 in the first year and ₹2,55,651 in the second before mess. Against an NIRF-reported median of ₹12,00,000, a fully loan-funded student services debt larger than two years of median gross pay. That is comfortable if you land in the top decile and heavy if you land in the middle — and by definition half the class does.
Reconsider if you are counting on MAH MBA-CET. KJSIM does not accept it for the MBA and there is no CAP route in. If CET is your strongest score, your Maharashtra options are the DTE-affiliated institutes, not this one.
Reconsider if you want a work-experience-heavy cohort. With 55% freshers in the MBA 2025-2027 class, discussion skews younger than at schools filtering for three-plus years, and lateral recruiters read that profile accordingly.
Reconsider if you need certainty on financial aid. Aid runs 20% to 80% of tuition and merit scholarships number five full-tuition waivers. Both are discretionary, and the aid committee's decision is stated as final — so no offer should be planned around a waiver you have not received.
Reconsider if you actually want a specialist school. If healthcare, sports or marketing communications is genuinely your career, KJSIM's dedicated MBA variants may fit better than the general MBA — different fees, different cohorts, and far smaller batches at 30 seats each.
8. How KJ Somaiya Compares
Compare on decision axes, not on a league table position that moves every year.
Against SP Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai: SPJIMR is the harder admit and the stronger consulting and general-management brand in the city. If you clear both, the question is whether the fee difference and the admit odds justify holding out. KJSIM's honest position is the more reachable Mumbai campus with an overlapping recruiter list at the top end.
Against NMIMS Mumbai: the closest structural peer — private university, Mumbai campus, its own entrance route rather than CAP, similar fee band. This is usually the genuine head-to-head. Decide it on major availability, batch size and which campus your target sector recruits from.
Against Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies: JBIMS is the cost outlier, a government-linked Mumbai institute at a fraction of KJSIM's fees, admitting largely through MAH MBA-CET. If your CET score is strong, JBIMS changes the ROI question entirely and KJSIM cannot compete on fee. If your CAT or NMAT score is the strong one, JBIMS is not reachable and the comparison is moot.
Against Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune: the trade is city against campus. SIBM Pune offers a residential campus experience; KJSIM offers Mumbai, which matters if your target sector is BFSI, consulting or media, where the recruiters, the summer internships and the alumni are physically in the same city.
Check affordability before choice filling
Admission route, eligibility and preference order come first. As one decision checkpoint, enter the loan you may need to see the EMI and total interest before locking a college in your counselling choices.
Standard reducing-balance arithmetic on the numbers you enter — your actual rate and moratorium terms depend on the lender. The 40% ceiling is this site's own ROI rule: an EMI above 40% of take-home leaves nothing for rent, food or savings.

Frequently asked questions
Which entrance exams does KJ Somaiya accept for the MBA?
For MBA and MBA-Healthcare Management, the Batch 2026-28 brochure lists CAT 2025, XAT 2026, GMAT with scores valid from 1 January 2023 to 20 January 2026, NMAT 2025 counting the first two attempts, and CMAT 2026. MAH MBA-CET is not accepted and there is no Maharashtra CAP route in. MBA-Sports Management additionally accepts MAT, ATMA, PERA-CET and CUET.
Is work experience required for KJ Somaiya's MBA?
No. KJSIM sets no minimum work-experience requirement. Eligibility is a minimum 50% aggregate in graduation from a recognised university, and final-year students may apply. Work experience carries 10% of the selection composite, so it helps your score rather than gating entry. The published MBA 2025-2027 class profile was 55% freshers, 31% with one to two years and 14% above two years.
What is the KJ Somaiya cutoff, and how does shortlisting work?
KJSIM publishes no percentile cutoff, so treat any specific figure quoted elsewhere as unsourced. The brochure states candidates are shortlisted on qualifying exam scores alone, and that shortlist is the gate. The final offer runs on a composite in which the exam is 25%, with the interview, written ability test, problem situation analysis, academic record and work experience carrying the remaining 75%.
Is hostel accommodation available, and what does it cost?
Sandipani (boys) and Maitreyi (girls) hostels sit on the Somaiya Vidyavihar campus. The official A.Y. 2026-27 sheet lists ₹2,85,651 for a first-year triple-sharing place and ₹4,12,499 double-sharing, including ₹30,000 of refundable deposits, with mess at ₹6,000 a month on top. Fees are paid through the Somaiya myaccount portal, whose hostel tab opens only after admission fees are paid.
How do scholarships and education loans work at KJ Somaiya?
Financial Aid is awarded at 20% to 80% of tuition fees and applies for the whole programme. Eligibility includes family income below ₹8,00,000 a year, applicants with disabilities, and wards of defence personnel disabled or deceased in the line of duty. Five merit scholarships carry a 100% tuition waiver. The institute states it arranges no bank loan itself but provides the documentation banks require.
How should I verify the latest KJ Somaiya Mumbai admission route?
Start with CAT and the institute selection process. Then match the current prospectus, application notice and counselling schedule on the official authority or institute website. A route from an older cycle should not be assumed to remain unchanged.
How should I read the KJ Somaiya Mumbai cutoff shown on this page?
Read the exam, year, round, category, quota, branch and closing-rank or percentile label together. A cutoff from another category or an earlier round is not a promise of admission in the current cycle.
How do I confirm the complete fee for KJ Somaiya Mumbai?
Use the current official fee notice and add tuition, development or university charges, deposits, hostel, mess and other compulsory costs. Ask for the payable amount and refund terms in writing before transferring money.
Extended admission FAQs
Do placement figures guarantee an outcome at KJ Somaiya Mumbai?
No. A highest, average, median or placement-rate figure describes a particular batch and methodology. Prefer a completed, dated report with batch size and branch-level context; it cannot guarantee an individual salary or job.
Can anyone guarantee direct admission to KJ Somaiya Mumbai?
No counsellor can override eligibility, merit, counselling or the institute's published process. Use only official portals and receipts, and do not pay an individual who promises a confirmed seat outside the documented route.
Which documents should I prepare for KJ Somaiya Mumbai admission?
Keep the current exam scorecard, identity and nationality proof, Class 10 and 12 records, leaving or transfer certificate, allotment letter and payment receipt. Domicile, category, income, NCL, EWS, migration, gap or NRI documents apply only where the current authority requires them.
What should I compare before placing KJ Somaiya Mumbai in my preference list?
Compare the exact branch or programme, admission probability, total cost, location, accreditation, published outcomes and a realistic fallback option. Never list a college you would be unable or unwilling to join if allotted.
What if a current KJ Somaiya Mumbai figure is still unverified?
Treat it as pending rather than filling the gap with an aggregator estimate. Use the previous completed cycle only as historical context and wait for the competent authority or institute to publish the current figure.
How current is the information on this KJ Somaiya Mumbai page?
The page shows its publication or update date and keeps changing figures tied to an academic year. No page-specific primary source is registered yet, so current figures require direct verification.
How can Future Career Guidance help with KJ Somaiya Mumbai admission?
We help interpret eligibility, compare realistic options, organise documents and build a preference or application plan. We do not guarantee allotment, bypass merit or collect unofficial cash premiums for seats.
Which source takes priority if two KJ Somaiya Mumbai figures conflict?
Use the newest document issued by the competent counselling authority, regulator or institute for the same year, quota and programme. A dated primary document takes priority over an undated webpage, brochure summary or third-party listing.
