KJ Somaiya Mumbai MBA Admission 2027: Cutoff, Fees & Placements

K J Somaiya Institute of Management, still widely called SIMSR, was set up in 1981 and now sits inside Somaiya Vidyavihar University. Being private puts it outside Maharashtra CAP counselling: there is no state merit list to wait for, you apply to the institute. It holds AACSB accreditation and the campus is at Vidyavihar East, Mumbai 400077.

Four full-time MBAs run here. MBA, the core programme, with majors and minors across finance, marketing, analytics, strategy, HR and operations. MBA Healthcare Management, with capstone projects at K J Somaiya Hospital. MBA Sports Management, which includes a 7-to-10-day International Immersion Program — KJSIM publishes no separate fee for it. And MBA Marketing Communications, run with Jio Creative Labs, three days on campus and two at JCL.

Read this before the table. The batch you are applying to is 2027-29 and KJSIM has not published its schedule. These are the last published figures, not your final bill.

The “both years” column adds KJSIM’s own two year-end totals. Here is what makes up the MBA figure:

Sports Management is the cheapest of the four by some distance — ₹15,13,000 against ₹23,87,500 — and its International Immersion Program sits outside that figure with no published price. Ask KJSIM what it costs before you budget on the low total.

Housing is at the Sandipani and Maitreyi hostels on the Somaiya campus. These charges are for AY2026-27, from a schedule KJSIM signed and dated in December 2025.

The year-one figures include a refundable ₹25,000 hostel deposit and a refundable ₹5,000 mess deposit, which is why year two is ₹30,000 lower. Registration is ₹2,000 a year either way.

Mess is not in any of those numbers. It is billed at ₹6,000 a month, by demand draft to the catering contractor, paid at hostel allotment.

This total is our arithmetic on KJSIM’s published figures, not a number the institute prints. Mess is counted at 24 months; KJSIM’s hostel document says the amount varies with course duration. Personal spending, travel and books are on top.

A three-year graduate programme in any discipline with at least 50% in the aggregate, from a university recognised by AIU or AICTE. Final-year students can apply: if your last exams fall in April or May 2027 you may apply now, but you must produce proof of passing with 50% on or before 31 August 2027 or the admission is forfeited.

Two rules catch people out. GMAT scores count only if dated between 1 January 2024 and 20 January 2027. And NMAT here counts your best of two attempts — the opposite of NMIMS, which reads only your first, so a weak first sitting is recoverable at KJSIM and not there.

The application deadline is 20 January 2027, 11:59 PM for all four programmes and all categories — resident Indian, NRI, OCI, foreign national and CIWGC. One form covers more than one programme. After that: shortlisting, a candidate profile form, then WAT online and PSA and the interview in person in several Indian cities, then the merit list and online seat allotment. Eighteen documents are needed at admission; a statement of purpose only for MBA-HCM and MBA-SM.

Shortlisting runs two ways off one application form. Merit: you meet the cutoff KJSIM sets for your exam — it publishes no number, so nobody can tell you it in advance. Profile: if you miss that cutoff you are considered anyway, provided you have consistent academics, a valid score, and 12 to 42 months of full-time paid work after graduation. You do not choose a route; filling the form puts you in both.

That band is a real constraint in both directions. Under 12 months the profile route is shut, and over 42 months it is shut too — this is not a door for senior candidates.

A 99-percentile score buys a quarter of the decision on the merit route and 15% on the profile one. Very few schools publish this, and fewer still weight an interview at 40%.

KJSIM has its MBA placements audited to Indian Placement Reporting Standards — by Crisil to 2022-24, and by B2K Analytics for 2023-25, signed in October 2025. That is a stronger class of figure than a brochure highlight.

Read the scope before the numbers: the auditors state that the student counts include international placements while the salary figures are calculated on domestic placements only.

The current batch is not audited yet. For 2024-26 KJSIM reports a median of ₹12,00,000, a highest of ₹29,30,000 and 210 recruiters, and says an audit “will be undertaken in due course”. The gap between ₹29.30 lakh and ₹12 lakh is the whole point: the highest package is one person, and the median has not moved in three audited years. Borrow against the median.

Two other programmes report separately. MBA Executive 2023-24: average ₹15,73,000, median ₹13,00,000, highest ₹24,95,000, on a batch averaging 78 months of work experience. MBA Sports Management 2024-26: average ₹7,07,086, highest ₹8,40,000. KJSIM breaks out no figures for MBA-HCM or MBA-MC.

Financial aid runs from 20% to 80% of tuition and holds for the whole programme rather than one year. You qualify on any one of three grounds: family income below ₹8,00,000 a year, a disability, or being the ward of defence personnel disabled or killed in the line of duty. The committee’s decision is final.

Separately there are five merit scholarships, each a full tuition waiver, for candidates resident in India and under 30 with a strong academic record and achievement at state, national or international level in sport, the arts or community service.

Tuition across the two years is ₹20,51,000, so an 80% award is worth about ₹16.4 lakh — against a total cost nearer ₹30 lakh. Worth applying for even if you think you are borderline; do not budget on aid you have not been granted.

JBIMS and SIMSREE are government institutes at a fraction of this fee — if your score can reach them the arithmetic is not close. SPJIMR charges a comparable fee for materially higher placement outcomes, so compare those two on outcome rather than price. NMIMS Mumbai takes NMAT only and only your first attempt; KJSIM accepts five exams and counts your better NMAT, so a bad CAT closes fewer doors here. SIBM Pune is SNAP-gated, which makes it a separate decision taken months earlier.

The honest positioning: a finance-weighted Mumbai school with four decades behind it, audited numbers and an unusually transparent selection formula. Its median does not pretend to be an IIM’s. Where it is genuinely worth a shot is the candidate with a middling score and a strong profile — because almost nowhere else puts 40% on the interview.
