1. TAPMI: What It Is and Where It Stands
T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) is a constituent unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in Manipal, Karnataka. That status matters for how you apply: TAPMI is neither an IIM nor a standalone private institute, but a unit of a deemed-to-be-university that the Ministry of Education accorded Institution of Eminence status in October 2020 (Dr Ramdas M. Pai Scholarships document, Batch 2026-28, TAPMI official). Its MBA programmes are approved by AICTE, and the institute carries AACSB and AMBA accreditation, with NBA accreditation also listed on its official site.
TAPMI's own publications disagree on the founding year, so we report both rather than pick one. The founder profile in the prospectus states that Shri Tonse Ananth Pai founded the institute in 1980 (TAPMI Prospectus 2026-28, page 5), while a later page of that same prospectus and the official site footer both say established in 1981.
In one line: TAPMI runs seven MBA programmes at Manipal plus one at Bengaluru, and NIRF placed it 39th among management institutes in 2025.

2. Admission Route: How You Actually Get In
TAPMI runs one admission route, and it runs that route itself. The prospectus is explicit that all applications must be submitted online and that there is no management quota at TAPMI (TAPMI Prospectus 2026-28). No Karnataka state counselling or CAP-style route is documented in the prospectus for these MBA programmes β unlike a Maharashtra institute admitting through MAH MBA-CET CAP, you deal with TAPMI directly. If a consultant tells you otherwise, ask them to point to it in the prospectus.
For the 2026-28 batch TAPMI accepts CAT 2025, XAT 2026 and GMAT scores dated 1 January 2021 to 31 January 2026; NMAT by GMAC 2025 is accepted only for the sectoral programmes, not MBA Core, whose published eligibility lists CAT, XAT and GMAT only (TAPMI official admissions page and TAPMI Prospectus 2026-28, page 42). Apply the same correction to the FAQ answer. NRI applicants may additionally use ATMA, CMAT or MAT. Minimum eligibility is a graduate degree from a recognised university with not less than 60% marks.
In one line: the interview stage decides more than your exam score β GD/WAT/PI carries 45% against 35% for the entrance test.
| Selection component | Published weightage |
|---|---|
| GD, WAT and Personal Interview | 45% |
| Entrance test score | 35% |
| Academic performance | 15% |
| Gender diversity and extra-curricular activities | 5% |
Weightage split as published on the TAPMI official admissions page for the 2026-28 batch. Key dates from the same source and the prospectus:
- Applications open: 15 October 2025
- Applications close: 27 January 2026
- GD/WAT/PI: February-March 2026, at Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi and Manipal
- First selection list: 10 April 2026 (marked tentative)
- Term I commences: June/July 2026 (marked tentative)
3. Fee Structure (What Is Officially Published)
TAPMI publishes tuition per year, not as a two-year total. For the 2026-28 batch, tuition for Indian-domicile students is the same across all seven MBA programmes. We deliberately do not multiply that into a programme total: the prospectus does not publish one, and a silently derived total is exactly how a wrong fee figure spreads across the internet. Ask the admissions office for the written instalment schedule before you size an education loan.
In one line: budget βΉ9,75,000 per year in tuition plus a βΉ20,000 one-time alumni membership fee, and get hostel and mess costs in writing separately.
| Component | Published amount | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fee, per year | βΉ9,75,000 | MBA, BKFS, HRM, IB, Marketing, Tech, AI & DS β Indian domicile |
| Tuition fee, per year | USD 18,300 | NRI β MBA, BKFS, HRM, Marketing |
| Alumni Lifetime Membership fee | βΉ20,000 | One-time |
| Caution deposit, refundable | USD 600 | Printed in USD in the prospectus β confirm the rupee amount |
| Training cost at SBI and BSE | USD 900 | MBA-BKFS students only |
| Hostel and mess fee | [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27] | Not published in the prospectus |
All figures AY2026-28, TAPMI Prospectus 2026-28, page 44. The non-refundable application fee scales with the number of programmes applied for: βΉ2,000 for one programme, rising to βΉ5,750 for seven; USD 30 for foreign nationals. Fee waivers exist under the Dr Ramdas M. Pai Scholarships, covered in the FAQ below.
4. Cutoffs and Shortlisting: How to Read Them
TAPMI publishes percentile thresholds tied to work experience rather than a single cutoff, which is unusual and genuinely useful β it tells you the bar moves with your profile before you apply.
In one line: a fresher needs above 90 percentile to clear the shortlist for MBA Core, while 12 to 23 months of work experience drops that bar to above 80 percentile.
| Programme | Applicant profile | Published threshold |
|---|---|---|
| MBA Core | Work experience below 11 months | Above 90 percentile |
| MBA Core | Work experience 12 to 23 months | Above 80 percentile |
| MBA Technology Management | Work experience under 12 months | Above 85 percentile |
Thresholds as published on the TAPMI official admissions page for the 2026-28 batch.
Read these as shortlisting thresholds, not closing cutoffs. Clearing the percentile bar gets you a GD/WAT/PI call; it does not get you an offer, because the entrance score is only 35% of the final decision. Programme-wise closing percentiles after the interview round are [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]: TAPMI does not publish a closing-percentile table, and any such table you see on an aggregator is reconstructed, not official.
One programme has an additional academic filter. MBA AI & Data Science requires a BE or B.Tech at undergraduate level in Computer Science, AI, ML, Data Sciences or a similar field, and the official admissions page states that freshers are also eligible to apply.
5. Placements: What Is Verifiable
This is where you need to be careful, because TAPMI's own placement reports publish averages and never a median. The only published median comes from its NIRF filing.
In one line: for the 2022-24 cohort TAPMI reported a NIRF median of βΉ13,09,000 across 514 placed graduates, while the same batch's top 50 averaged βΉ20.05 lakh.
| Programme, Batch 2023-25 | Placed | Average CTC | Highest CTC | Recruiters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MBA General | 340 of 340 interested | βΉ13.99 L | βΉ32.77 L | 89 |
| MBA BKFS | 58 of 58 | βΉ14.73 L | βΉ26.25 L | 30 |
| MBA Marketing | 46 of 46 | βΉ13.72 L | βΉ19.59 L | 34 |
| MBA HRM | 38 of 38 | βΉ12.86 L | βΉ19.59 L | 22 |
| MBA IB | 23 of 23 | βΉ11.74 L | βΉ16.00 L | 17 |
All figures AY2023-25, TAPMI Placement Report 2025. The report itself footnotes the average CTC figures as indicative, because some recruiters had not yet disclosed their CTC offer.
Now the medians, from TAPMI's own NIRF submission: βΉ11,68,000 for graduates of 2021-22 (449 placed), βΉ13,50,000 for 2022-23 (429 placed), and βΉ13,09,000 for 2023-24 (514 placed) β NIRF 2025, TAPMI submission IR-M-S-156. Two things follow. First, the median dipped year on year, from βΉ13,50,000 to βΉ13,09,000. Second, for that 2022-24 cohort the placement report's Average CTC of the top 50 was βΉ20.05 lakh (AY2022-24, TAPMI Placement Report 2024) β roughly 1.5 times the median. A headline average is pulled up by that tail; the median is the number to plan a loan against. The median for the 2023-25 batch is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2023-25] until TAPMI's NIRF 2026 submission is published.
6. Campus, Hostel and Living Costs
TAPMI is fully residential and physically separate from a metro. The prospectus describes a 44-acre green campus in the beach town of Udupi-Manipal; The prospectus describes a 44-acre green campus in the beach town of Udupi-Manipal (TAPMI Prospectus 2026-28, page 2). β drop the "44.11 acres" clause unless the specific TAPMI page carrying that figure can be named.. Manipal itself is a university town, which shapes daily life more than most applicants expect β everything is walkable, and there is no weekday commute into a corporate district.
In one line: the campus specification is well documented, the hostel fee is not β treat any hostel figure you see elsewhere as unverified.
- Residential accommodation on a twin-sharing basis, air-conditioned, with individual washrooms for every room
- Hostels with lifts, power back-up, WiFi and six common rooms for games and relaxation
- Air-conditioned classrooms with smart boards, dual projectors and high-speed internet; Bloomberg Labs; a 100-seater library
- Gym, basketball, football, cricket and badminton courts; campus store; student centre and canteens; night canteens
- Ambulance facility on campus with direct connect to Kasturba Hospital for emergencies
Campus and infrastructure details from the TAPMI Prospectus 2026-28, pages 3 and 48.
Hostel and mess fees: [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]. They are not published in the 2026-28 prospectus, and we will not estimate them. Request them in writing from the admissions office before you accept an offer. One detail worth knowing while you budget: the Dr Ramdas M. Pai Scholarships document states that scholarship holders shall bear all personal expenses including hostel accommodation and food. In other words, even a 100% tuition waiver leaves hostel, mess and living costs entirely on you.
7. Who Should NOT Choose TAPMI
An honest filter matters more than a brochure. Several profiles should think hard before committing.
- If you need a firm all-in, two-year number today. TAPMI publishes tuition per year only, and does not publish hostel or mess fees at all. If your family cannot commit without a total, either get the instalment schedule and hostel figure in writing first, or look elsewhere.
- If your entrance percentile is your single strongest asset. Only 35% of the final decision rests on it, while 45% rests on GD, WAT and PI. A very high CAT percentile simply buys less leverage here than at a score-driven school, and a strong score with a weak interview is a genuine rejection risk.
- If you have three or more years of experience and want a lateral or senior entry. The published percentile thresholds are framed around the zero to 23-month range, and the reporting emphasis on salary uplift is oriented to early-career candidates.
- If you want a metro campus with weekday industry access. Manipal is a residential university town in Udupi district, not Mumbai, Gurgaon or Bengaluru.
- If a scholarship is load-bearing in your plan. You must pay the full first-year fee including the refundable caution deposit at admission, then apply within one week of class commencement; the second-year waiver requires a CGPA of 7.5 at the end of Term 3, and no waiver covers hostel or food.
8. How TAPMI Compares
Compare on decision axes, not on a ranking number. These are the axes where TAPMI differs meaningfully from the schools applicants usually weigh it against, and the peers worth putting beside it are SPJIMR Mumbai, MDI Gurgaon, IMT Ghaziabad, Great Lakes Chennai and SIBM Pune.
- Selection philosophy. TAPMI publishes its split openly and puts 45% on the interview round. If you interview well and your percentile is merely good, TAPMI is structurally friendlier than a school that leans on the exam score. Check each peer's own admissions page for its published split β several do not disclose one.
- Sector orientation. TAPMI's 2023-25 sector mix skews to BFSI, at 39% of MBA General placements (TAPMI Placement Report 2025), and it runs a dedicated MBA-BKFS. If banking and financial services is the goal, that specialisation is a real differentiator. If consulting or FMCG is the goal, weigh the metro schools harder.
- Location and format. A fully residential Manipal campus versus a Mumbai, Gurgaon or Pune address is a live trade-off between immersion and industry proximity.
- Cost transparency. Verify every peer's fee on its own official fee page and its salary claims in its own placement report or NIRF filing. We have not reproduced peer figures here because we have not opened those documents for this page.
Check affordability before choice filling
Admission route, eligibility and preference order come first. As one decision checkpoint, enter the loan you may need to see the EMI and total interest before locking a college in your counselling choices.
Standard reducing-balance arithmetic on the numbers you enter β your actual rate and moratorium terms depend on the lender. The 40% ceiling is this site's own ROI rule: an EMI above 40% of take-home leaves nothing for rent, food or savings.

Frequently asked questions
Which entrance exams does TAPMI accept for the 2026-28 MBA batch?
TAPMI accepts CAT 2025, XAT 2026, GMAT scores dated 1 January 2021 to 31 January 2026, and NMAT by GMAC 2025, per its official admissions page. NRI applicants may additionally use ATMA, CMAT or MAT. Minimum eligibility is a graduate degree from a recognised university with not less than 60% marks. Confirm the accepted score window on tapmi.edu.in before paying the application fee.
Do I need work experience to apply to TAPMI?
No, freshers are eligible, but the published bar is higher for them. TAPMI lists above 90 percentile for MBA Core applicants with under 11 months of experience, against above 80 percentile for those with 12 to 23 months. Work experience also counts in scholarship selection, where number of months of experience is the first tie-breaker among applicants.
How does TAPMI shortlist and finally select candidates?
Shortlisting is on your entrance exam score. Shortlisted candidates then attend a Group Discussion, a Written Ability Test and a Personal Interview, held February to March 2026 across seven cities. The final decision uses a published split: GD/WAT/PI 45 percent, entrance test 35 percent, academic performance 15 percent, and gender diversity plus extra-curriculars 5 percent.
Is TAPMI residential, and what does the hostel cost?
TAPMI describes a residential campus with twin-sharing air-conditioned rooms and individual washrooms in its 2026-28 prospectus, but publishes no hostel or mess fee in that document. Treat the hostel figure as unpublished and ask the admissions office for it in writing. Note that scholarship holders must pay hostel and food costs themselves, whatever the tuition waiver.
How do TAPMI scholarships and education loans work?
The prospectus states TAPMI has associated with several banks so students can access education loans, and directs applicants to the admissions team. Separately, the Dr Ramdas M. Pai Scholarships offer programme-fee waivers, but you must pay the full first-year fee including the refundable caution deposit at admission, then apply within one week of class commencement with supporting documents.
How should I verify the latest TAPMI Manipal admission route?
Start with CAT and the institute selection process. Then match the current prospectus, application notice and counselling schedule on the official authority or institute website. A route from an older cycle should not be assumed to remain unchanged.
How should I read the TAPMI Manipal cutoff shown on this page?
Read the exam, year, round, category, quota, branch and closing-rank or percentile label together. A cutoff from another category or an earlier round is not a promise of admission in the current cycle.
How do I confirm the complete fee for TAPMI Manipal?
Use the current official fee notice and add tuition, development or university charges, deposits, hostel, mess and other compulsory costs. Ask for the payable amount and refund terms in writing before transferring money.
Extended admission FAQs
Do placement figures guarantee an outcome at TAPMI Manipal?
No. A highest, average, median or placement-rate figure describes a particular batch and methodology. Prefer a completed, dated report with batch size and branch-level context; it cannot guarantee an individual salary or job.
Can anyone guarantee direct admission to TAPMI Manipal?
No counsellor can override eligibility, merit, counselling or the institute's published process. Use only official portals and receipts, and do not pay an individual who promises a confirmed seat outside the documented route.
Which documents should I prepare for TAPMI Manipal admission?
Keep the current exam scorecard, identity and nationality proof, Class 10 and 12 records, leaving or transfer certificate, allotment letter and payment receipt. Domicile, category, income, NCL, EWS, migration, gap or NRI documents apply only where the current authority requires them.
What should I compare before placing TAPMI Manipal in my preference list?
Compare the exact branch or programme, admission probability, total cost, location, accreditation, published outcomes and a realistic fallback option. Never list a college you would be unable or unwilling to join if allotted.
What if a current TAPMI Manipal figure is still unverified?
Treat it as pending rather than filling the gap with an aggregator estimate. Use the previous completed cycle only as historical context and wait for the competent authority or institute to publish the current figure.
How current is the information on this TAPMI Manipal page?
The page shows its publication or update date and keeps changing figures tied to an academic year. No page-specific primary source is registered yet, so current figures require direct verification.
How can Future Career Guidance help with TAPMI Manipal admission?
We help interpret eligibility, compare realistic options, organise documents and build a preference or application plan. We do not guarantee allotment, bypass merit or collect unofficial cash premiums for seats.
Which source takes priority if two TAPMI Manipal figures conflict?
Use the newest document issued by the competent counselling authority, regulator or institute for the same year, quota and programme. A dated primary document takes priority over an undated webpage, brochure summary or third-party listing.
