VIT Pune Admission 2026: Cutoff, Fees & Placements

VIT publishes one first-year CAP fee sheet covering every category, broken into six heads. The table below reproduces it. Each row's total is the sum of its own heads, and all eighteen reconcile against the totals VIT prints.

The FRA number and the payable number are not the same thing. The Fees Regulating Authority approved ₹2,06,000 for VIT's B.Tech first year, and that figure is exactly tuition ₹1,79,130 plus development ₹26,870. The remaining ₹6,171 on an Open seat is SPPU eligibility, exam and university fees plus student insurance. So a parent comparing "VIT's fee" against another college needs to know which of the two figures is being quoted.

Three structural things worth reading off the table. First, OBC, EBC, EWS and SEBC pay exactly half tuition — ₹89,565 against ₹1,79,130. Second, the girls variants of those same four categories pay no tuition at all, which drops the first-year cost from ₹1,22,606 to ₹33,041, a difference of roughly ₹90,000. Third, SC and ST pay neither tuition nor development, leaving ₹6,171 of statutory fees.

The Open–OMS row differs from Open by exactly ₹500, on the eligibility fee alone (₹1,150 against ₹650). An outside-Maharashtra candidate on an All-India CAP seat should not expect a materially different fee at VIT — unlike some institutes where the All-India column carries a higher development fee.

Most college pages either avoid a four-year total or quietly multiply one year by four without saying so. Here we can publish it properly, because VIT states the basis itself. Its institute-level admission document says: "The fee mentioned in the fee structure is applicable per academic year. Candidates are required to pay the same fees for every academic year."

The four-year column applies VIT's own stated repetition; it is not a projection of future fee revisions.

What this total does and does not include. It covers the tuition-side fee only. Hostel is separate and additional — at the AY2025-26 rates below, four years of boys' hostel adds roughly ₹5,00,000 and girls' about ₹4,80,000 on top, if a hostel place is taken every year. Personal expenses, travel, laptop and books are excluded because we have no official figure for them and will not invent one.

The honest caveat. VIT's statement is that the published structure repeats annually — it is not a promise that the structure will never be revised. The CAP sheet separately notes that eligibility, exam and university fees change with SPPU circulars, and the FRA approves the tuition component year by year. Treat the four-year column as the current structure carried forward on the institute's own basis, and confirm each year's demand when it is issued.

VIT publishes a minimum hostel fee with mess included, separately from tuition. Both totals below reconcile against their own components.

VIT states that mess is compulsory with hostel admission, that each room accommodates two to three students with basic furniture and essentials, and that a detailed fee structure is provided separately.

Read "minimum" literally. The figures above are the floor, and VIT says a detailed structure is issued separately — so a particular room type or block can cost more. Ask for the detailed structure before you budget, rather than assuming ₹1,25,000 is the number you will be billed.

Mess is not optional. Because mess is compulsory with hostel admission, the food cost cannot be removed by eating outside. The published figure covers breakfast and dinner, which means lunch on teaching days is a separate personal cost that is not in any official number on this page.

On safety, VIT lists CCTV surveillance in key areas, resident wardens available 24/7, regular inspections and maintenance, and fire safety equipment installed across all hostel blocks. These are the institute's own published statements about its facilities.

On the two years where both sources overlap they agree exactly — Computer Engineering reads 1,869 and 2,823 in each independently.

Why merit numbers rather than percentiles. CAP allots against the Maharashtra State General Merit Number, and it is the value that reads unambiguously from both documents. A lower number is a harder seat.

The trend is consistent and it favours applicants. Every computing branch closed further down the merit list each year. Computer Engineering went 1,570 → 1,869 → 2,823 → 3,505, meaning the last candidate admitted in 2025-26 stood roughly 1,900 ranks lower than in 2022-23. Information Technology more than doubled its closing number over the same period. The likely driver is supply: VIT added Software Engineering, Data Science and IoT branches over these years, and more computing seats spread the same demand further down the list.

The non-computing branches did not follow. Mechanical sat between 11,081 and 12,151 across three years and Instrumentation between 15,032 and 16,768 — essentially flat, with no easing trend. Civil appears only from 2024-25, and Chemical Engineering ran in 2023-24 and is absent afterwards.

None of this predicts 2026-27. Closing merit numbers move with the applicant pool, the seat matrix and how candidates order preferences in that cycle, and the branch list itself has changed twice in four years.

VIT publishes a median alongside the highest package, and it publishes six consecutive years of it. That is unusual and it is the more useful of the two numbers: a median describes the middle graduate, while a highest package describes one.

The two columns tell different stories, and the median is the honest one. The median climbed in every single year — 6.29, 6.50, 6.70, 7.00, 7.50, 8.10 — a steady rise of roughly 29% across six years. The highest package over the same period went 28, 33.75, 44, 41, 51, 45: up, down, up, down. If you judged VIT by its headline number you would conclude 2023-24 was its best year and 2024-25 a decline; the median says the opposite, and the median is what the middle student actually received.

Read the third column carefully. VIT reports "placement + higher studies" combined, not placement alone. A student who went on to a master's degree counts in that 97.00%. That is a legitimate way to report an outcome, but it is not the same metric as a pure placement percentage, and it should not be compared directly against a college that reports only placements.

Current cycle, clearly marked ongoing. For AY2025-26 VIT displays a highest package of ₹50 LPA, a median of ₹7.6 LPA and 900+ placement drives. That cycle has not closed, so those figures are provisional — and note the ongoing median of ₹7.6 LPA currently sits below the completed 2024-25 figure of ₹8.10 LPA, which is normal partway through a season and should not be read as a decline.

On scale, VIT states that over 500 companies visit for campus placements each year and that over 1,500 students from different streams take part in the process.

VIT's twelve branches and their sanctioned intake are below. VIT states a total of 3,720, and the twelve rows sum to exactly that.

Six branches have almost the same name. CSE (Artificial Intelligence), CSE (Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning), CSE (Data Science), CSE (IoT & Cyber Security including Blockchain Technology), Computer Engineering (Software Engineering) and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science are six distinct programmes with six distinct choice codes. In an option form they are six separate entries, and their closing merit numbers differ by thousands of ranks. Match the ten-digit choice code, not the title — this is the single most likely place to fill the wrong preference at VIT.

Scale changes what a cutoff means. Computer Engineering carries 720 seats, twice any other branch and six times Civil's 120. A branch with 720 seats necessarily reaches further down the merit list than one with 120, so its higher closing number reflects capacity as much as demand.

On the CAP-versus-institute split, the 2025-26 seat matrix shows Computer Engineering at 468 Maharashtra CAP, 108 All-India CAP and 144 institute-level seats, with Information Technology, E&TC and Mechanical each at 234 / 54 / 72 and Civil at 96 / 18 / 6.

VIT does operate institute-level (IL), commonly called management quota, seats — 144 in Computer Engineering alone. Unlike a discretionary quota, VIT states that these are filled "strictly on the basis of Inter-Se Merit from the pool of eligible candidates who have explicitly applied under this category", and that the institute runs the process under guidelines issued by the State CET Cell and other competent authorities.

VIT's own warning is worth quoting in full: "Parents are strongly advised to avoid engaging with intermediaries or agent networks." That is the institute's statement, on its own admission document. There is no version of this route that requires a broker — the application is on the CET Cell portal and VIT's own site, and allotment is on published merit.

What "institute level" does not mean here. It does not mean a seat can be bought, and it does not mean merit is waived — a non-zero MHT-CET or JEE Main score is a hard requirement, and allotment is by inter-se merit within the applicant pool. What it does mean is that a candidate who missed CAP allotment has a second, documented route, provided they applied under the category explicitly. Missing that explicit application is what removes people from the pool.

VIT's CAP seats are allotted under the State CET Cell's round rules, published in the Information Brochure for Academic Year 2026-27 dated 2 July 2026. These decide outcomes as much as your merit number does.

Both CAP routes run on the State CET Cell's calendar rather than VIT's own, so the exam schedule governs registration, merit list, option form and round dates. This interacts badly with VIT's six similar computing branches. If you list CSE (Artificial Intelligence) first because you meant CSE (Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning), and CAP allots it, the seat auto-freezes and your counselling ends — on a branch you did not intend, with no Round II. Verify the ten-digit choice code against the intake table above before you submit.

The quieter risk needs no decision from you at all: forfeiture is automatic. Missing the ARC reporting window or failing to complete self-scrutiny releases the seat by default. Diarise the reporting deadline the day the allotment is published.

None of these is a scoring problem. A valid merit number still loses the intended seat if the option form carries the wrong branch code, and no counselling service — ours included — can reopen a round once it has closed.

The three Pune institutes most often weighed against each other are VIT, PICT Pune and COEP Technological University. All three appear on the same State CET Cell cut-off list, which allows a like-for-like comparison without relying on anyone's marketing.

Reachability is the clearest difference. For the computing seat in that round, COEP closed at merit 243, PICT at 791 and VIT at 3,505. A candidate around merit 2,000 was out of range at both COEP and PICT but comfortably within range at VIT. That is a real planning fact, not a ranking opinion, and it is largely a function of scale: VIT's 3,720 sanctioned seats are nearly five times PICT's 780.

The management-quota answer differs completely across the three. COEP has zero institute-level seats — CAP merit is the only door. VIT and PICT both publish institute-level pools. If a fallback route matters to your planning, that distinction matters more than a few hundred ranks.

Breadth is the third axis. PICT offers five branches, all computing and electronics. VIT offers twelve, of which eight are computing or AI — so it is simultaneously computing-heavy and broader than PICT. COEP is the only one of the three with civil, metallurgy and manufacturing. If there is any chance you want a core branch, COEP serves it, VIT partly, PICT not at all.

A page that only argues for a college is not much use during choice filling. Each point below rests on the same official material used above.

None of this argues against VIT for the candidate it suits. A six-year rising median, a published median at all, an explicitly merit-based institute-level route and an institute that prints its own warning against agents are all points in its favour. The honest caution is narrower: it is a computing-weighted institute at an unaided fee, and its branch list is easy to misread.

Why some rows are blank on purpose. A figure with no traceable document is worse than an acknowledged gap, because a number that looks sourced gets trusted and built upon. Where the document exists but has not yet been read carefully enough to publish, the row says so.
