XLRI Jamshedpur admission overview

XLRI Jamshedpur admission guidance for 2027: eligibility, entrance route, cutoffs, fees, placements, documents and choice-filling support.

Evidence note: Use the academic year shown beside changing figures and verify the linked official document before payment or choice locking.

1. XLRI Jamshedpur: What It Is and Where It Stands

XLRI – Xavier School of Management was founded in Jamshedpur in 1949 by Fr Quinn Enright, S.J., working with the then General Manager of TISCO, N. J. Haley; the present heritage campus was inaugurated in 1962 (XLRI Admission Prospectus 2026).

Legally it is a registered society, Xavier Labour Relations Institute, registered with the Government of Jharkhand. Its AICTE filing lists the affiliating university as "Not Applicable" (AICTE Mandatory Disclosure, prepared June 2023, XLRI Jamshedpur). That line matters more than it looks: XLRI is autonomous, is affiliated to no university, and awards its own post-graduate diplomas rather than university degrees. The main campus sits at C. H. Area (East), Jamshedpur 831001; a second campus, XLRI Delhi-NCR at Jhajjar, began its academic year in August 2020.

Full-time programmes run from Jamshedpur are the two-year PGDM (Business Management), the two-year PGDM (Human Resource Management), the 18-month PGDM (General Management) for working professionals, the XLRI–Rutgers double-masters in supply chain, and the doctoral FPM and EFPM. PGDM (IEV) runs at Delhi-NCR.

Accreditations, taken from XLRI's own accreditations page: NBA for the PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM) programmes; AACSB, first earned in 2016 and re-accredited for 2021–2026; AMBA for 2025–2030, its third consecutive term; BGA for 2025–2030; and full membership of EFMD.

On the government ranking, XLRI placed 9th in Management with a score of 68.13 (NIRF 2024) and 10th with 70.63 (NIRF 2025).

2. Admission Route: How You Actually Get In

XLRI conducts the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) on behalf of XAMI member schools. For Indian candidates applying to PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM), XAT is the only route in. NRI, foreign national, PIO and OCI candidates may apply through GMAT for all programmes. PGDM (GM) applicants may submit XAT, GMAT or GRE and must hold at least three years of relevant managerial experience.

The prospectus is unusually blunt about shortlisting: the shortlist of candidates for the BM and HRM interviews is based only on XAT scores (XLRI Admission Prospectus 2026). Your college, your profile and your work history do not get you the call — the score does. XLRI then states that it also considers XAT performance, relevant work experience, academic background and extracurricular activities alongside the personal interview and/or group discussion when preparing the final list. It publishes no numerical weightage split, so treat any percentage breakdown you see elsewhere as unverified.

There is no state quota and no centralised counselling route here — no CAP process, no published Jharkhand domicile reservation. Applications go through xatonline.in only. Eligibility for BM and HRM is a three-year bachelor's degree in any discipline recognised by a university or deemed university; final-year students may apply if their exams finish by the date the prospectus specifies.

Intake on XLRI's admission procedure page: PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM) together, 600 seats; PGDM (GMP), 120 seats.

In one line: the XAT 2027 cycle runs from registration on 15 July 2026 to a session start in mid-June 2027 (XLRI admission procedure page).

3. Fee Structure (What Is Officially Published)

XLRI publishes one headline number per programme, not a line-item break-up.

In one line: the Admission Prospectus 2026 prints ₹15.25 lakh p.a. against "Fees and other charges payable for 2 years PGDM(BM)/PGDM(HRM)", and adds that fees are subject to revision and will be communicated before admission.

ProgrammePublished figureSource
PGDM (BM) / PGDM (HRM), 2 years₹15.25 lakh p.a.XLRI Admission Prospectus 2026
PGDM (GM), 18 months₹25.8 lakhXLRI Admission Prospectus 2026
PGDM (LSCM), XLRI year₹15.3 lakh (indicative)XLRI Admission Prospectus 2026

PGDM (BM) / PGDM (HRM)₹25.5 lakh, period not statedAICTE Mandatory Disclosure, June 2023
PGDM (General)₹20.3 lakh, period not statedAICTE Mandatory Disclosure, June 2023

We are deliberately not multiplying ₹15.25 lakh by two to hand you a total course fee. XLRI pairs a per-annum figure with a two-year programme, publishes no term-wise instalment schedule, and the AICTE column is labelled only "Fees (in Lakhs)" with no period attached. Any two-year total quoted elsewhere is someone's arithmetic, not XLRI's published figure. Get the current instalment schedule in writing from the admissions office before you sign a loan.

Payment mechanics, from XLRI's Student Manual for the BM and HRM programmes: fees are announced in the annual prospectus, the schedule goes on the AIS notice board, payment is by bank draft favouring XLRI Jamshedpur, and late payment attracts ₹50 per day. Nothing except the caution deposit is refundable.

4. Cutoffs and Shortlisting: How to Read Them

Because the BM and HRM shortlist runs on XAT score alone, the cutoff is the whole game — and XLRI publishes both sectional and overall percentile cutoffs after each result.

In one line: the last cutoff table XLRI released in a press statement put the BM overall bar at 95 percentile for male engineers and 92 for female candidates, with sectional bars that must be cleared separately (XAT 2023 cutoffs, XLRI press release, 4 February 2023).

Programme and categoryVADMQATotal
BM, general engineers, male75758595
BM, general engineers, female75758092
BM, general non-engineers, male75758595
BM, general non-engineers, female75758092
HRM, general engineers, male90757593
HRM, general engineers, female90756591
HRM, general non-engineers, male90757090
HRM, general non-engineers, female90756088

Two things follow. The sectional bars are separate gates, so a 96 overall with a 70 in Quantitative Ability does not clear BM. And HRM leans hard on verbal and logical reasoning, where the bar sits at 90 across every category while its QA bar falls as low as 60.

XLRI states it sets lower cutoffs for women, for non-engineering candidates and for underprivileged communities to widen the cohort.

For the GMAT route, the scores XLRI published alongside its XAT 2021 list were 730 for BM and 710 for HRM (CUTOFF-2021.pdf, acad.xlri.ac.in).

XAT 2027 cutoffs: [FIGURE MISSING — XAT 2027]. Cutoffs move with test-taker numbers, paper difficulty and seats, so last year's figure is a guide, not a target.

5. Placements: What Is Verifiable

In one line: for the graduating batch of 2024-26, XLRI reports a median of ₹29 lakh per annum and an average of ₹31.40 lakh across 576 students from both campuses (XLRI final placement report, Batch 2024-26).

MeasureBatch 2024-26
Median CTC₹29.00 lakh p.a.
Average CTC₹31.40 lakh p.a.
Top 10th percentile, average₹49.20 lakh p.a.
Top 25th percentile, average₹44.18 lakh p.a.
Highest domestic offer₹59.00 lakh p.a.
Highest international offer₹1.10 crore p.a.
Students / recruiting organisations576 / 145
Pre-placement offers42.5% of the cohort

Read the median, not the average. The ₹2.4 lakh gap between them is the top tail pulling the mean up, and the crore-plus international offer sits in that tail where almost nobody in the batch lands. Note also that this release covers Jamshedpur and Delhi-NCR together; a Jamshedpur-only median is [FIGURE MISSING].

XLRI's own NIRF submissions give an independently filed series for the two-year PG programme, and it runs lower.

Graduating yearGraduated in min. timePlacedMedian salary
2021-22356351₹30,00,000
2022-23358357₹30,24,000
2023-24384382₹28,00,000

(NIRF 2024 and NIRF 2025, XLRI submission.) The AICTE Mandatory Disclosure of June 2023 separately records, for 2023, minimum / maximum / average of 12 / 52.25 / 21.5 lakh for PGDM (BM). Different definitions, different years — which is exactly why one "package" number is not something you can plan a loan around.

6. Campus, Hostel and Living Costs

XLRI Jamshedpur is fully residential. PGDM (BM), PGDM (HRM) and FPM students live across six blocks holding more than 1,250 air-conditioned rooms, in separate residences for men and women, each room with a LAN access point and 24-hour Wi-Fi (XLRI Admission Prospectus 2026). PGDM (GM) students have their own complex of 151 rooms with attached bathrooms, a third of them double-bedded, with a kitchenette and a limited number of family accommodations subject to availability.

Dining halls are run by the student body, Infracom, serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food; XLRI's exchange fact sheet notes the mess serves four meals a day.

Medical cover on campus includes an infirmary with beds, nursing staff round the clock, visiting doctors and an ambulance; Tata Main Hospital is about 3 km away, and students are covered by a group mediclaim policy for one year. The Sir Jehangir Ghandy Library, established in 1949, holds 70,264 books and 28,670 e-books alongside subscriptions such as Bloomberg, Scopus and Euromonitor. Sports facilities include a grass football field, cricket ground, futsal, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, indoor badminton courts and a gymnasium.

Getting there: the campus is roughly 7 km from Tatanagar railway station, near Jubilee Park. The nearest airport is Ranchi, about 2.5–3 hours by road; Kolkata is 3.5–4 hours by train.

Hostel and mess charges as a separate line: [FIGURE MISSING — AY2026-27]. XLRI folds them into "fees and other charges" and publishes no standalone hostel tariff; the Student Manual confirms hostel fees and mess dues are settled against the caution deposit when you leave.

7. Who Should NOT Choose XLRI Jamshedpur

Run the money first. A published ₹15.25 lakh per annum against a published batch median of ₹29 lakh makes this a serious loan-funded decision, and the payback maths only works if you actually land near that median. If the household cannot absorb the EMI through a weak year, or if you are quietly budgeting off the top-decile number rather than the median, do not sign.

Skip XLRI if you specifically need a university degree. XLRI awards post-graduate diplomas and has no affiliating university. For most Indian employers this is a non-issue; for certain foreign university admissions, some public-sector eligibility rules and some doctoral routes, it is not. Check your own downstream requirement before committing.

Skip it if your XAT profile is lopsided. The shortlist is score-only and the sectional gates are hard: a strong overall percentile with one weak section is a rejection, not a borderline case worth appealing.

Think carefully if location weighs on you. Jamshedpur is not a metro, the nearest airport is two and a half to three hours away by road, and casual weekend access to corporate India is not what a Mumbai or Gurgaon campus gives you.

Finally, be honest about fit. XLRI's identity is built on human resource management and general management. If you want a one-year programme, a heavy quant-finance or pure analytics track, or an entrepreneurship-first campus, other schools will serve that ambition better than this one will.

8. How XLRI Jamshedpur Compares

Compare on the axis that actually decides your choice, not on a composite rank.

On human resources, the honest peer is TISS Mumbai. XLRI's HRM programme is NBA-accredited and its placement release shows dedicated HR consulting hiring from Aon, Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC; TISS competes on the social-policy and industrial-relations side from a very different fee base. If HR is the goal, this is the comparison to run properly.

On general management and finance, the comparison is with IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta, ranked 1 and 5 in NIRF 2025 Management against XLRI at 10. Those are CAT schools, so the entrance itself is a different bet — XAT's decision-making section rewards a different skill set than CAT does, and a candidate can clear one comfortably while missing the other.

On cost against outcome, MDI Gurgaon and SPJIMR Mumbai are the schools consulting-track applicants most often weigh against XLRI. Both sit in the same broad private-school fee band and both are in or near metros, which changes internship access and weekend economics in ways a Jamshedpur campus cannot match.

On exam strategy, remember XAT opens XLRI plus the XAMI member schools while CAT opens the IIMs, and most serious applicants sit both. The real question is rarely which school is better in the abstract. It is which one your section-wise score profile actually clears.

Check affordability before choice filling

Admission route, eligibility and preference order come first. As one decision checkpoint, enter the loan you may need to see the EMI and total interest before locking a college in your counselling choices.

CALCULATORWhat will this loan actually cost you?
Monthly EMIβ‚Ή16,344
Total interestβ‚Ή3,72,894
Total repaidβ‚Ή13,72,894
Take-home needed (EMI ≀ 40%)β‚Ή40,860/mo

Standard reducing-balance arithmetic on the numbers you enter β€” your actual rate and moratorium terms depend on the lender. The 40% ceiling is this site's own ROI rule: an EMI above 40% of take-home leaves nothing for rent, food or savings.

Frequently asked questions

Which entrance exams does XLRI Jamshedpur accept?

For PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM), Indian candidates can apply only through XAT, which XLRI itself conducts on behalf of XAMI. NRI, foreign national, PIO and OCI candidates may apply through GMAT for all programmes. The 18-month PGDM (GM) accepts XAT, GMAT or GRE. Every route is registered through xatonline.in; there is no separate offline application.

Do I need work experience to apply to XLRI Jamshedpur?

No. Eligibility for PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM) is a three-year bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university or deemed university, and final-year students may apply. Freshers are admitted every year. XLRI says relevant work experience is one factor it weighs when preparing the final list, but it is not a requirement. PGDM (GM) is different: it needs three years of managerial experience.

What exactly decides the XLRI interview shortlist?

XLRI's prospectus states the shortlist for BM and HRM interviews is based only on XAT scores, so your college, profile and work history do not affect whether the call comes. You must clear both the sectional and the overall percentile cutoffs. After the interview or group discussion, XLRI says it also weighs work experience, academics and extracurriculars, but it publishes no numerical weightage.

Is XLRI Jamshedpur fully residential, and what is the hostel like?

Yes, it is fully residential. PGDM (BM), PGDM (HRM) and FPM students are housed across six blocks with more than 1,250 air-conditioned rooms, in separate residences for men and women, with LAN points and 24-hour Wi-Fi. PGDM (GM) has its own 151-room complex. Dining halls are student-managed. XLRI publishes no standalone hostel tariff, so ask admissions for the current break-up.

How do scholarships and education loans work at XLRI?

XLRI awards merit and merit-cum-need scholarships listed in its prospectus, funded largely by corporates and alumni. Applications go to the Dean within a notified window, and the final list is announced during the second term once donors confirm. For loans, the Student Manual says study loans come from banks and other agencies, the nearest being the State Bank of India XLRI branch, and the institute carries no obligation on the loan.

How should I verify the latest XLRI Jamshedpur admission route?

Start with XAT and the institute selection process. Then match the current prospectus, application notice and counselling schedule on the official authority or institute website. A route from an older cycle should not be assumed to remain unchanged.

How should I read the XLRI Jamshedpur cutoff shown on this page?

Read the exam, year, round, category, quota, branch and closing-rank or percentile label together. A cutoff from another category or an earlier round is not a promise of admission in the current cycle.

How do I confirm the complete fee for XLRI Jamshedpur?

Use the current official fee notice and add tuition, development or university charges, deposits, hostel, mess and other compulsory costs. Ask for the payable amount and refund terms in writing before transferring money.

Extended admission FAQs

Do placement figures guarantee an outcome at XLRI Jamshedpur?

No. A highest, average, median or placement-rate figure describes a particular batch and methodology. Prefer a completed, dated report with batch size and branch-level context; it cannot guarantee an individual salary or job.

Can anyone guarantee direct admission to XLRI Jamshedpur?

No counsellor can override eligibility, merit, counselling or the institute's published process. Use only official portals and receipts, and do not pay an individual who promises a confirmed seat outside the documented route.

Which documents should I prepare for XLRI Jamshedpur admission?

Keep the current exam scorecard, identity and nationality proof, Class 10 and 12 records, leaving or transfer certificate, allotment letter and payment receipt. Domicile, category, income, NCL, EWS, migration, gap or NRI documents apply only where the current authority requires them.

What should I compare before placing XLRI Jamshedpur in my preference list?

Compare the exact branch or programme, admission probability, total cost, location, accreditation, published outcomes and a realistic fallback option. Never list a college you would be unable or unwilling to join if allotted.

What if a current XLRI Jamshedpur figure is still unverified?

Treat it as pending rather than filling the gap with an aggregator estimate. Use the previous completed cycle only as historical context and wait for the competent authority or institute to publish the current figure.

How current is the information on this XLRI Jamshedpur page?

The page shows its publication or update date and keeps changing figures tied to an academic year. No page-specific primary source is registered yet, so current figures require direct verification.

How can Future Career Guidance help with XLRI Jamshedpur admission?

We help interpret eligibility, compare realistic options, organise documents and build a preference or application plan. We do not guarantee allotment, bypass merit or collect unofficial cash premiums for seats.

Which source takes priority if two XLRI Jamshedpur figures conflict?

Use the newest document issued by the competent counselling authority, regulator or institute for the same year, quota and programme. A dated primary document takes priority over an undated webpage, brochure summary or third-party listing.
