QUICK OVERVIEW

JEE Advanced overview

JEE (Advanced) is the second stage of admission to the twenty-three Indian Institutes of Technology. It is conducted by the seven zonal coordinating IITs under the Joint Admission Board, with one IIT organising it on a rotating basis — IIT Roorkee held that role in the 2026 cycle (jeeadv.ac.in, official site). Only candidates who clear JEE (Main) and finish inside the announced top band of its B.E./B.Tech. paper may register. Performance here forms the basis for admission to the Bachelors, Integrated Masters and Dual Degree programmes offered by the IITs, and a few other institutes also admit on this rank. The exam runs only in computer based test mode.

  • Full form: Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced).
  • Eligibility: Five conditions apply together (AY2026-27, official eligibility page, jeeadv.ac.in). Attempts: a maximum of two, in two consecutive years. Age: general candidates born on or after October 1, 2001, with five years of relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Class XII: first appearance in 2025 or 2026 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compulsory. JEE (Main): a place among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates, all categories included, in the B.E./B.Tech. paper. Anyone already admitted to an IIT is ineligible. Confirm the current cycle's page before registering.
  • Exam pattern: Two papers of three hours each; appearing in both is compulsory (AY2026-27, JEE (Advanced) 2026 Information Brochure, Clauses 9 and 17). Each paper carries three separate sections — Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The exam runs only in computer based test mode; the keyboard is disabled and answers are entered with the mouse and an on-screen keypad. Papers are set in English and Hindi, switchable during the exam. Negative marking applies to some question types, and the full marking scheme is released only in the instructions on exam day.

Evidence note: Exam dates and rules change by cycle; confirm the current information bulletin before applying.
