GMAT accepting colleges in India: the full GMAC list, and what it does not tell you

GMAC lists 191 institutions in India that accept or require a GMAT score for admission to at least one of their programmes, as at 23 August 2026. Sixteen of them are IIMs. The list also includes two IITs, six NIT-family departments, and institutes far outside business schooling altogether — NIFT, TISS, the National Institute of Bank Management. But the list is institution-level, not programme-level: it tells you the institute takes GMAT somewhere, not that the course you want takes it. At several IIMs the programme that accepts GMAT is an executive or one-year course, while the flagship two-year MBA still runs through CAT. So use this list to build a shortlist, then confirm on the specific programme's own admission page before you plan a test around it.

Key facts

  • 191 institutions in India on GMAC's list, retrieved 2026-08-23. GMAC's own counter read “Results 1 – 191 of 191”.
  • 16 IIMs appear. The CAT 2026 Information Bulletin lists 22 IIMs — so six do not appear under an IIM name.
  • Globally GMAC states the exam is used by 7,700+ programmes at 2,400+ universities and organisations across 110 countries.
  • The list names institutions, not courses. GMAC describes it as universities, fellowships and scholarship organisations that “either accept or require” GMAT scores — it does not say for which programme.
  • It carries no cut-off, no fee, no deadline and no intake. None of those appear anywhere in the source document.
  • CAT 2026 remains the route for most flagship two-year MBA seats: test on 29 November 2026, score valid until 31 December 2027 (CAT 2026 Information Bulletin).

What GMAC's list actually certifies

In one line: it certifies the institute, not the course — and that difference is where most GMAT plans go wrong.

This is the single most important thing to understand before you read any list of “GMAT colleges in India”, including ours. GMAC publishes one row per institution. The row says that somewhere inside that institution there is a programme, a fellowship or a scholarship that accepts or requires a GMAT score. It does not say which one, and GMAC does not claim it does — the page describes its own contents as universities, fellowships and scholarship organisations that either accept or require GMAT scores for admission to their programmes.

For an Indian candidate that gap is not academic, it is expensive. Several of the older IIMs appear on this list because of a one-year or executive programme aimed at candidates with substantial work experience, while the two-year flagship MBA that most people mean when they say “IIM” still admits through CAT. A candidate who reads the institution name, books a GMAT slot and skips CAT registration on that basis has not shortened their route — they have closed one.

We are deliberately not printing a programme-by-programme table here, because we have not read 191 sets of admission pages, and inventing that mapping from general knowledge is precisely the kind of plausible-looking detail that is wrong often enough to cost somebody a year. What the list is genuinely good for is the opposite direction: if an institute is not on it, a GMAT score is very unlikely to be a route there at all, and you can drop it from your plan quickly.

Sixteen IIMs are on the list. Six are not.

In one line: GMAT does not open every IIM, and the two official documents reconcile exactly — 16 on the list, 6 absent, 22 in total.

Filtering the list to entries whose name begins “Indian Institute of Management” returns 16:

Source: Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), GMAT Accepting Universities & Schools, filtered to Country/Region = India, retrieved 2026-08-23. Names reproduced exactly as GMAC prints them, including the entries that repeat the institute name.

The CAT 2026 Information Bulletin lists 22 participating IIMs. Six of those do not appear under an IIM name on GMAC's India list: Bodh Gaya, Guwahati, Jammu, Mumbai, Sambalpur and Sirmaur. Sixteen plus six is twenty-two, so the two official documents reconcile with nothing left over — which is the check that makes the comparison worth printing at all.

One of those six needs a caveat rather than a conclusion. GMAC's list separately carries an entry for the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE). That institute is widely reported to have been redesignated as an IIM, but we have not read the statute or the institute's own notification, so we are not going to assert it on your behalf. If IIM Mumbai matters to your shortlist, confirm the institute's current designation and which of its programmes takes GMAT on its own website before relying on either name.

The practical reading: a GMAT score is a real route into the IIM system, but a partial one. If your target is a specific IIM, check that IIM. If your target is “an IIM”, CAT 2026 still covers more of them than GMAT does.

It is not only business schools

In one line: engineering institutes, a social-sciences institute, a fashion institute and a banking institute all appear — GMAT is not exclusively an MBA test in India.

Two IITs appear: Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Six entries come from the NIT family, including NIT Karnataka and NIT Srinagar under DASA — the Direct Admission of Students Abroad channel — and departments of management at NIT Tiruchirappalli and NIT Warangal. Beyond engineering the list carries the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, the National Institute of Fashion Technology, the National Institute of Bank Management, the National Institute of Securities Markets and the Institute of Rural Management Anand.

This tells you something useful about how the test is used here. A GMAT score is not only a business-school key; it is accepted by a range of postgraduate programmes that want evidence of quantitative and verbal reasoning from applicants who did not sit an Indian national entrance test — which includes a large share of candidates applying from abroad, and candidates who finished their degree several years ago. If that describes you, the list is worth reading past the familiar names.

The full list of 191 institutions

In one line: this is GMAC's India list in full, as it stood on 2026-08-23 — their live page remains the authority.

Reproduced alphabetically, exactly as GMAC prints each name. Some entries look odd because GMAC prints the university and the school as one string, and a few repeat themselves. We have not tidied them: the value of this list is that it is what the authority published, and a cleaned-up version would be our claim rather than theirs. Search it, or filter to the IIMs and the IIT/NIT entries.

How to check whether your specific programme takes GMAT

In one line: four steps, and none of them involve an aggregator's summary.

  1. Find the institute on the list above. If it is absent, treat GMAT as unlikely to be a route there and move on rather than hunting for an exception.
  2. Open the institute's own admissions page for the exact programme — not the institute homepage, and not a third-party “GMAT colleges” page. The programme page is the only place that states its own accepted tests.
  3. Read the eligibility clause, not the marketing copy. Look for whether GMAT is accepted instead of a national test or only alongside one, and whether it is restricted to a category of applicant — international candidates, NRI candidates, or applicants with a stated minimum work experience are the common restrictions.
  4. Note the round deadlines and score-age rule. A programme that accepts GMAT will state how old a score it will take and which application round it must reach. That, not the test date, is what actually constrains your timeline.

If you would rather not do that across a dozen institutes, that shortlisting and document-checking is exactly the work we do — see MBA and PGDM admission guidance. What we will not do is tell you a programme accepts GMAT because its parent institution appears on a list.

GMAT or CAT for the 2027 intake?

In one line: it depends on which seats you actually want, and for most Indian two-year MBA seats the answer is still CAT.

The honest comparison starts with what each test opens rather than which is “better”. For the MBA/PGDM intake beginning in 2027, CAT 2026 is the test feeding the 22 IIMs and a long list of other Indian institutes. From the CAT 2026 Information Bulletin: registration ran from 3 August 2026 to 15 September 2026, the test is on 29 November 2026, it runs 120 minutes across three 40-minute sections with no switching between them, the fee is ₹2,700 (₹1,350 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates), and the score is valid until 31 December 2027. Eligibility is a bachelor's degree with 50% or equivalent CGPA, 45% for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.

For GMAT we are deliberately not printing a matching set of figures. The GMAC document we hold is the school list, not a bulletin — it carries no fee, no test window and no score validity — and we would rather leave a gap than fill it with numbers we have not read from the authority. Check mba.com for the current fee, slot availability and score-validity rule before you budget around them.

What can be said structurally, without any figure: CAT is a single fixed date once a year, so a bad morning costs a full cycle. GMAT is scheduled by appointment, which is why it suits candidates whose timeline does not fit a November test — people applying from abroad, people with work commitments, people who decided late. And a GMAT score travels: GMAC states the exam is used by 7,700+ programmes in 110 countries, so the same score supports applications outside India in a way a CAT score does not.

For most candidates targeting a two-year Indian MBA starting 2027, that resolves to taking CAT 2026 as the primary route, and treating GMAT as an addition if you are also applying abroad or to a specific programme you have confirmed accepts it. Sitting GMAT instead of CAT only makes sense when you have checked the actual programme pages and they support it.

What this list does not contain

In one line: no scores, no fees, no deadlines — and anyone publishing those “from the GMAC list” did not get them there.

It is worth stating plainly, because a great many pages ranking for this query present score requirements and fee figures alongside the same institution names, which implies a source that does not exist. GMAC's document contains institution name, country and region. That is all it contains.

  • No GMAT cut-off or average. Where a programme publishes a class profile, that comes from the programme, not from this list.
  • No fees. Not tuition, not application fee, not hostel.
  • No application deadlines or round dates.
  • No indication that a score alone is sufficient. Every programme on the list runs its own selection — essays, interviews, work experience, academic record.
  • No statement of which programme accepts the score, which is the caveat this entire page is built around.

Who should not plan around GMAT

In one line: if your shortlist is Indian two-year MBA seats and you have no reason to apply abroad, GMAT is an extra cost rather than an extra door.

A test is only worth taking if it opens something you actually want. GMAT is probably not the right primary route if:

  • Your target list is Indian flagship two-year MBA seats. Most of them admit through CAT, and being on GMAC's list does not change that for the specific programme.
  • You are a final-year student with no work experience. Several of the Indian programmes that accept GMAT are aimed at experienced candidates, so the door the score opens may not be open to you yet.
  • You have not checked a single programme page. Taking the test first and finding the route afterwards is the wrong order and the most common version of this mistake.
  • Budget is tight and you are already registered for CAT. Two test fees, two preparation tracks and two timelines is a real cost; it needs a reason beyond keeping options open.

None of that is an argument against GMAT. It is an argument against taking it by default because a list of famous institute names looked encouraging.

Common mistakes

In one line: each of these is settled by one document — the programme's own admission page.

What goes wrong, and what settles it
The mistakeWhat settles it
Reading an institute name as “my course takes GMAT”The specific programme's admission or eligibility page
Skipping CAT registration because an IIM appeared on the listThat IIM's own page for the programme you want, before 15 September
Trusting a cut-off score attributed to “the GMAC list”The list has no scores in it; the programme's class profile, if published
Assuming an old GMAT score will still be acceptedThe programme's stated score-age rule, plus GMAC on validity
Assuming acceptance means the seat is open to domestic applicantsThe eligibility clause — several routes are NRI or international only
Using a list republished without a dateA dated snapshot plus GMAC's live page; institutions are added and removed

Frequently asked questions

How many colleges in India accept GMAT?

191, on GMAC's own list filtered to India, retrieved 2026-08-23. Treat that as a snapshot rather than a permanent number — institutions are added and removed, which is why the retrieval date is printed beside it and why GMAC's live page is linked as the authority.

Do all IIMs accept GMAT?

No. Sixteen IIMs appear on the list against 22 in the CAT 2026 Information Bulletin. And appearing on the list does not mean the flagship two-year MBA accepts GMAT — at several IIMs the GMAT route is a one-year or executive programme. Check the specific IIM and the specific programme.

Does ISB accept GMAT?

The Indian School of Business appears on GMAC's India list. Which of its programmes accept GMAT, what they expect alongside the score and what the round deadlines are all come from ISB's own admissions pages, not from this list.

Can I get into an IIM with GMAT instead of CAT?

For some programmes at some IIMs, yes — and for most flagship two-year MBA seats, no. Because the consequence of getting this wrong is a missed CAT registration window, verify it on the IIM's own page well before CAT registration closes rather than relying on any list, including this one.

Is GMAT easier than CAT?

They are different tests with different structures and different candidate pools, so “easier” is not a property either one has. The question that matters is which seats each opens for you. CAT 2026 is a single fixed date on 29 November 2026 with a score valid to 31 December 2027; GMAT is scheduled by appointment and is accepted by 7,700+ programmes across 110 countries.

What GMAT score do Indian colleges need?

The GMAC list carries no scores at all, so any figure presented as coming from it is not sourced. Where a programme publishes a class profile or a stated minimum, that programme is the source. We would rather leave this blank than print a number nobody read.

Is NITIE or IIM Mumbai on the list?

The list carries an entry for the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE). It does not carry one under the IIM Mumbai name. We have not read a primary source for the redesignation, so confirm the institute's current name and which programmes take GMAT on its own website.

Do IITs accept GMAT?

Two appear on the list — Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras — along with six NIT-family entries, two of them under the DASA channel for students applying from abroad. As everywhere else on this page, the institution appearing does not tell you which programme it applies to.

Where to go next

The exam pages carry the test-side detail: GMAT, CAT 2026, XAT 2027 and NMAT, or the full entrance exam directory. For the money side of an MBA decision rather than the test side, MBA and PGDM guidance and the fee and EMI calculator work on the total cost rather than the first-year figure, which is the safer way to plan a two-year programme.
